Default Scuppers

1979 V20 Fisherman

The boat had ball scuppers. I know they "work" but I am not a fan.

The transom is getting nidabond filled. I would really prefer to use a stainless one piece scupper such as

However, I haven't seen this boat float yet, but the bottom paint says they may be under water...

Any experience?

The good thing about ball scuppers is they are easily cleared from inside the boat when debris prevents the ball from getting a good seal...I like the clean look of the ones you show, but would be concerned about a way to clear them if needed.

'79 was only 2nd yr Wellcraft utilized a self-draining floor deck and if I recall, the scuppers were through the transom...later migrated to the sides just ahead of the transom where my '84's are.

Underwater or not will depend largely on where THEY put them and how much weight you put in the stern...batteries, 4-stroke motor, bait tanks, etc...you probably wanna do it now, but you also might want to consider getting her in the water, where realistically the water line is once weighted before you decide on which scuppers and whether you wanna keep 'em where Wellcraft put them...

I may mount the engine, and float'er to check for an accurate level. Then drill the new scupper tubes out.

The deck is connected to the splash well with this "mini golf" esque scupper drain system. I will deff try to replace the hoses, it seems like a bad hose plus a bad following sea could = disaster if your bilge pumps crap out.

I agree with Reel. In order to eliminate additional holes in my hull at or below the waterline I moved my scuppers from the sides of the hull to the splash well after replacing the transom. Turns out putting everything back together my splash well is about 3/4 of an inch high than it used to be. This causes poor drainage from the deck plus any debris then goes into the splash well and has to find its way out through those scuppers. After I float her I will mark the sides to install new scuppers out the sides hopefully a little higher than factory.

My batteries are located in the center console. And if I go 4 stroke it will be a 140/150 suzuki inline 4.

i also thought about doing 2 sets. 1 for the deck and leave the ball scuppers for the spash area behind the motor. I can run the deck scuppers an inch or 2 higher than the spash well and use larger diameter tubing.

I may be reinventing the wheel....
