destroyer, that sucks. Sorry to hear of your situation. If you go back to CTTs map [page 2], I am waterfront at Sunken Meadow state park. The terrain here is a bit more wooded and not as flat like the south shore is. Floods here aren't the concern as much as tree damage. CTT, I am surprised, and happy, to hear you didn't get murdered by the storm surge. I was w/o electric/cable/phone for five days. Even the cell phones didn't work. The "HURRICANE" wasn't nearly as bad as what was to be expected. I think our strongest wind gust was around 58mph and the 8-10" of rain predicted was more like 3- 4". I threw the cover on the pool sat. morning and had two generators gassed up and ready.[ you couldn't buy gas without waiting 1/2 an hour to get to pumps] No trees down in my yard, one garbage pail of sticks/leaves and one 50 lb. tree branch. I thought the power would back on the next day. WELL..., not the case. I couldn't believe that a good portion of Long Isalnds electrical grid was in ruins from a wimpy tropical storm. We got lucky as far as floods and wind damage and i count my blessings. My power came back on just a few hours ago but many are still without. Good luck to all who didn't fare as well.

Destroyer, sounds like you got some problems. Wish there was something we could do. I remember you missing the Charleston get together over flooding issues. I can't blame you for wanting a change of address with the ongoing problems. Keep your head up, it will get better. Hydraulic pressure causes a lot of wall failures in FL. Not basements obviously but more along the lines of seawalls and retaining walls.

Guys (all of you) It fills me with a ton of warm feelings just to know that you guys have offered help and condolances. I work for a construction firm with a really good boss (who's kept me on the payroll through all of this) so I'm sure that any equipment that I need will be forthcoming, from masons from the hall to restoration crews from the insurance company. (I carry a $1,000,000 blanket rider on my homeowners policy for just this reason) But all the money in the world cannot equal how great it feels to have all of your well wishes. We'll survive. We'll rebuild or move, but either way we'll survive.

And yes, the Passaic river has had a lot more problems than the other rivers around here. THe reason isn't the Passaic river though, it's the Pompton River that joins with the Passaic near where I live. THere is a dam upriver, and in 2007 the Army Corp of Assholes installed a new floodgate system on it. Since then we've experienced near catastropic floods every year.... far worse than anything ever seen in the last 20+ years we've lived here. Of course they deny any problems or responsibility, and I'm sure it's just a coincidence, but to my way of thinking when you lower the floodgates 6" on a lake that's almost 2 miles long and a mile wide that's a lot of water that has to go somewhere.....These greedy bas tards had 10 days that they knew this storm was coming, but they sell the water in that reservior, so they didn't drain it... and then, when the storm hit and they saw that they might have a problem, they opened the gates and raised the level in the river almost 4 feet in less than 8 hours. It's being hushed up for political reasons of course, but they are directly responsible for hundreds of houses being ruined.
Sorry to go on a rant like that, but I'm a tad upset over it. I don't mind when Mother Nature does her thing, I figure that we all take those chances, be it a Hurricane, Tornado, Drought, or whatever... but I hate it when it's manmade and the people responsible for it have been getting away with it for years... and everyone knows it.

Again, thanks to everyone for the well wishes... they really do mean a lot.

That will almost certainly backfire as we tried something like this don here by us where they changed the flow of water to prevent a golf course from flooding(the guy who built it had the city limits extended out to cover the course as he was buddies with everybody in the city). Needless to say the news twisted the story around and the homeowners ended up getting sued that called em out. Don't yeah just love amerika.

Yep... Ferm's right on the money. No lawsuit here, but they (the tv channels) have been to hundreds of homes around here, (Channel 2, 4, 5, 7 and 12). They've gotten an earfull from lots of people in the last 4 years since the floodgates were put in, but there has not been a single peep, not a mention of it on any channel in 4 years. Someone is getting paid a lot of money to keep this thing quiet.
