You guys hold some pretty strong feeling on the VRO thing huh? I really did the research when I replaced my fuel pump. Everything I found out/read or heard was this...... call it B.S. if you want to. The earlier model VRO systems did have their share of issues. The latest VRO fuel pumps that you would buy today are very reliable. I was convinced enough to spend $300 on a new pump. Luckily when mine failed it was the fuel half of the pump. Just my 2 cents worth.

Shicks you're running on borrowed time if you're running the VRO system it will die and you'll lost the power head just like the rest of us have just give it time.

I never hear of anyone disconnecting the oil injection on Yamaha engines ??? What's the deal there? Are they more reliable than the OMC pumps of past and present?

I don't know jack from a whole in the ground, but somethin tells me the VRO should be disconnected on any 80's model engine. Maybe even early 90's. Especially Mercury, Johnson, and Evinrude. But like I said, I don't know jack.

Take it from Skool. He's opened up several motors and knows jack from a hole in the ground, so I'd take his advice any day. If he tells me to disconnect the VRO on my '04 Yammi, I might argue a little, but then after the warranty period is up, I'll disconnect it ;D

Thanks There BR. The Yamma's have a nice set up on there oil injection especially on the newer motors. I'd run it on one like yours till she couldn't go anymore. Or till they made me go 4 stroke from the EPA.

There's no question mid-eighties to early 90s OMCs wrecked the reputation of VROs, but I've known late 90s Mercs to fail, too...BR touched on my auto-oiler RULE..."no warranty, no auto-oiler! Period!"...pre-mixed my old Rude for years...no big deal... ;)...

I had an Evinrude 185 on my 85 V20 and I pre mixed but it seemed my plugs got fouled pretty easily when I trolled alot. Other than that no problems.

You could take a six gallon tank mixed 75-100:1 premix and swicth over when trolling to keep them from fouling.I think 100:1 is what the vro feeds it at idle.Just dont forget to swicth back over be for gettin on it!

Smokey...a trick an OMC tech told me...when idling/trolling, TILT the motor up some so back of cylinders are ABOVE level...this will keep unburned oil from accumulating in the "top" (end w/the plug) of the cylinder and fouling the plug...worked for me for years...hope it works for ya!... ;)...

I think i might have a carb or 2 out of tune,I can only tilt my engine up a littil and it starts to run like crap and almost stalls out, makes it hard docking on a shallow lake.It runs like crazy wide open thoe,It tacks 5200 wideopen im not sure how fast i think 40-45 or so by my buddys *boat(frozen speedo).Im not really sure what a 83' 175hp Rude should tack,it fells about right.Im pretty sure its the factory prop. ???
