Does it do it all the time or random? Tread with caution if you take it to a tranny shop. Most transmission shops around here are money hungry crooks!

And are you 100% sure its in the transmission? Not the rear end? I had a noise under my 1996 2500 Sierra and took it to several shops. All of them wanted to do a tranny rebuild. Took it to Hurst from a recommendation at my tire shop. They drove the truck, got back to the shop and he got under and immediately put his hand on my driveshaft carrier bearing. It was TOO hot to touch. Two days later it went out. Locked up on the driveshaft and locked both rear wheels and then the entire bearing carrier got ripped off the frame from the momentum.
