1000 hours seems about right for that year motor. Heck most times a boat/engine that has been used regularly is way more relieable than one with low hours! Yes thats a lot but if its been well maintained its no biggie. Check shift shaft and steering arm for rust/corrosion and do a compression test. I just sold a 23 Mako with twin 130 Yammies-early 90s. They had about 1500 hours on them. They ran fine, but were showing their age....had a bunch of little things go bad. Good luck!
