With only 90hp on a V20 You probably have too much pitch. A 14 x 15 would be better and alow the motor to rev more in it's power band.

I had a ring failure, and it melted all over the cylinder wall.
Cause?? well it was a 88 motor, and I bought it used, and I put a huge amount of hours in the 4 years I had it. For what ever reason it was here and now its gone :'(

Merc recommends 4500 to 5000 R's but what I found when going to the larger prop was redused R's and increased mph. Do you think it will hurt the engine if I were to keep the prop with lower R's and higher mph.
I had to rebuild the trim motor a couple of week ago when my brothers came to visit and I found it would'nt work. My wife knows how I cant stand for something like this to happen "egg on the face", she asked me as we were heading to some last minute intertainment idea, how much a new motor cost. After telling her 7 or 8 Thousand she seemed she would intertain the idea of a new one next year (one small step for man and one giant leap for my kind of woman). If I can get my ducks in a row by next year, there may be a tank full of low octane gas and oh my I forgot to add the oil, what will happen now!! I really like older stuff as long as it don't cause to much trouble so I would hate to see the old gal meet her doom this way. Any ideas how to peacefully put her to sleep?

That old Merc tower of power is a very good motor but not worth spending a lot of money on should things start going south. IF you blow it up you can part it out on ebay for a few hundred easy. There are a lot of used late 90's 150 to 200 HP 2 strokers out there with low hours that you can hang on it for $3K or so including controls...Frank

turbine, I had the same motor [a couple years newer] on a 19 1/2 ft. Angler CC. Before I bought the boat I was concerned that it may be a bit underpowered. Lemme tell ya that 90moved that boat along perfectly. With a stock alum. prop, it was good outta the hole and it topped out at nearly 40 mph. I was very impressed after the sea trial. When those motors are running good....they run great

I like this motor and it does run great for a 90. I stopped by the local merc shop in stockton and talked $$ on a 115 and 150 both 2 and 4 cycles. It sounds as if the 2 cycle is faster out of the hole and just as efficent.
But after hearing the price of a new one, I may be holding on to this tower of power for at least one more year. Bought some stuff called Quick Cleen from Merc, which you put in the tank and it clean out the carbon in the engine. Any body use this stuff and how does it work. Can you tell a difference in performance?
