Great question and from the sound of it you've licked your problem. I'm not having so much of a water problem as a trash in the fuel problem. It is probably just a matter of time before I have to do as you did.
Did you do the work or have someone do it for you? I have a poly tank, so hopefully I won't have to replace it. What kind of tank did you have?

It was a simple tank replacement. No foam-in, just lifted the floor, unscrewed the straps and removed. The only thing I did not replace was the 1.5 in fill. I could not get the old one out, but it says A2 on it, so I should be ok.

What is A2????

It is the USCG approved rating for fuel lines. The fill hose has to be rated A2 and the feed hose A1.
