those are great motors, they're not power houses, they'll never set speed records, but what they will do is pull the house down and not burn a whole lot of fuel doing it. In 22 years of working on boats, I've seen plenty of dead 250 6's, but never one that was worn out, they all failed due to other issues(mostly corrosion related). Parts for the internals are fare priced, the marine gear can get pricy. If you get a good one, take care of it and it will take care of you.
