6 cylinder chevy
 

Hey guys -

wellcraft newb here. I am looking at a late 70's 20 steplift. The boat originally had a mercruiser 470 4 cylinder in it with a mercruiser outdrive.

Right now it has a 6 cylinder 250 ci chevrolet in it. The outdrive is the original, but rebuilt.

My question, is the chevy a good engine, is it a common swap? Are parts cheap for it?

Any comments would be greatly appreciated

Is this the v20 from Delaware ??, Dont know anything about I/O's, sorry. But welcome to teh site. :D

Most of the 70's had 165hp, Chevy 250 stright 6cyl.

They are great little motors when taken care of.

Is it FWC?? If so you might have a good motor there, but if it is raw water cooled like I had, there could be issues.

Motor parts are pretty comon, and not badly priced, and you can still get Manafolds and stuff but they are costly!!

Welcome to the nuthouse. I have the same motor. I like it. It's about the right power and gets OK mileage. Flush it out with fresh water after use and it'll be fine.

I have the same motor...it was a pain getting it to run right after I bought the boat but now it's been 2 years w/o a problem. When maintained, I don't think you can beat the motor, and the old gen 1 outdrive.

those are great motors, they're not power houses, they'll never set speed records, but what they will do is pull the house down and not burn a whole lot of fuel doing it. In 22 years of working on boats, I've seen plenty of dead 250 6's, but never one that was worn out, they all failed due to other issues(mostly corrosion related). Parts for the internals are fare priced, the marine gear can get pricy. If you get a good one, take care of it and it will take care of you.
