Default How long to flush?

What is considered an ample amount of time to flush a motor after use in salt water? Does the size and type of engine matter ie: outboard vs I/O, V8 vs V4...
Do any of you use the salt cleansing agents if the boat is used weekly?
I have a GM 5.7L and an OMC 800. I have been flushing for about 10 minutes which seems like an eternity.

Thanks in advance,

BOM...I time 5 mins on mine, which seems an eternity to me...lotta H2o through in 5 mins...if that don't get it, it ain't gonna be got...JMHO ;)

There's also the saltwater flush...don't think necessary every time, but good idea every third to fifth time out...

i taste the water coming out the exhaust after couple mins and if it taste salty i check it again a couple more mins later then usually good so then i run it after no salt taste couple more mins. but the last 2 min after the salt taste is gone i rev the motor up and hold it around 3500 then pop it up a couple times to get the salt out of the high rpm water over flow lines. then shut her down.

yeah 3500 that's the only way you'll get your overflow lines and areas in the motor flushed, if you go to some shops out back they turn motors up in the 4500 to 5000 range on muffs. Scares me to go there though to hold there but setting timing advance requires getting it to 4500 on some motor.

I always heard that you run the risk of having a motor "run away" when you run up the rpms without a load. *I've heard stories about motors that continued to rev even after they were shut down when they "run away." scary

yeah if they run away it was due to running to lean with stopped up jets in the carbs the more cylinders the less likely it will happen. I've had jet ski's do that and to stop it just choke it and the fuel kills it on a dime.
