Some of the old Mercury "Boathouse Bulletins" are still to be found on the internet. As I recall back in 83' they said their 150hp would push a light V-20 to 46mph and a loaded one to 42mph. The 200...

I think the late 80's loopers were great motors, hate to see you get rid of it. On a V20 in open water it's a rare day that the speed of a 225 could be used, but when that day does finally happen 30...

It worked fine. Sort of hard to reach down and the tiller was not fully straightened out but I wanted to use the 25 for other purposes too. Later I had a 9.9 4 stroke that worked much better with a...

Wish someone with a connection to Mercury could get their hands on the old "Boathouse Bulletins" from Lake X where they tested boat & motor combinations. The 1983 Mercury info for the Wellcraft V20...

I certainly believe those numbers, right in line with the 28 mph from my old V-20 with an 85 Johnson. The Yamaha 3 cylinder is probably a bit lighter too.

A Wellcraft advertisement from the mid to late 70's had a photo of the V-20 center console with a pair of two cylinder Evinrude 50 hp motors. I believe the old 50's were very similar to the 48's...

Other Mfg's V-20's

I've said that an old fishing buddy had a heavy waterlogged V-20 clone with an OMC sterndrive. It seldom ran because of the old sterndrive, he finally tore the floor out and found the foam level full...

It seems very high and top heavy, but it has to extend far behind the boat with an outboard. It appears to have a pulley on the port side near the front of that rig. He's probably sewed rings on the...

We never saw any oil along the western LA shoreline. A tarball was found about a mile west of us, but analysis from BP Chemists said not from their well. My front yard is the Gulf of Mexico and I did...

My 83' model was still self bailing with full 60 gallon fuel tank, a 150 Johnson, a 25 kicker, 5 passengers, extra gas, fishing gear, dive gear...... You get the picture. Find a mid 80's model and...

If that's the 17 I'm thinking of it's a great looking boat with the same Step-lift hull as the V20. 2 fishing buddies had them and kept them for years. One had a 115 Evinrude and ran over 40, after...

If it's old "winter gas" and you're now above 70F it might be as simple as vapor lock. Refineries blend gas differently with more C4 for winter months so it'll kick off in cold temp's. I've had a...

Yes actually I've seen the 3.7 versus twin 70 Evinrudes, no race, the 3.7 was over 5 mph faster. It was similar in speed to a 140 2 stroke, not quite up with the 150's. All on V20's, they were the...

The old 360 is the second smallest big block Ford. Not counting the special HD truck engines it was something like 352, 360, 390, 406, 410, 427, 428, 429 then the 460. The 360 and 390 had low-rise...

Easy with a speargun, difficult with bait. But they're good eating if filleted, don't try to cook'em with the skin left on IMO.

Not a thick fillet on sheepshead, but really good to eat. The nearshore oil production platforms around here are stacked with them all the warm months. It's hard to get them to bite, but it's easy to...

Connecting tanks below the deck could also drain BOTH tanks to the bilge. Then any leak on either tank would drop to the level of the hole. Also a slight list would probably let a bit of gas vent...

I believe the Coast Guard level flotation rule was for boats less than 20'0", at least at that time. Suppose the extra 5" LOA exempted the V20 from that rule. I've never dug into a boat smaller than...

Most 2 strokes like RPM and won't last if lugged. Check the mfr's recommended RPM range, shouldn't drop below the bottom end of the RPM range with a full load. Sounds like this might be an economical...
