Epic thread, looking over 50 pages worth, I can only fault you for your taste in beer. CL or Nothin for this fat boy. Looking good.. As for fairing with Gelcoat, if you are that close on the glasswork go for it. BUT gel is no where near as easy to sand as fairing putty. Only way to do it and make it shine takes a lotta work. At some point in ?3 coats you have to add the wax to get the gel to cure, graduate your sanding from 400, 600, 800, 1000, 1500, 2000 because you wind up buffing the gel to a shine in the end. Otherwise it will be dull and I don't think going back and adding additional coats of gel after using the wax is advisable. Some other guys add Duratec to the gel I think. Makes it more durable and makes the shine last. if you aren't going to use it as a fairing putty. I got to go back and read Shine's many threads on CSC. He seems to have a grip on it.

thanks for the info Ridge!!
So I am a thrifty research kinda guy. I like finding products that work but at the same time are easy on the wallet. I am not going to be using the interlux perfection product on my boat because they dont have the color I want so ive switched to a urethane enamel. On the outside above water line and inside liner sides Im gonna be using a paint made by benjamin moore. Its called p22 industrial urethane enamel. After comparing specs with Pettitt Easypoxy and interlux Brightside I have found out that ingrediant wise the benjamin moore product is a step above theses "MARINE LABELED" paints because of the increased polyurethane percentage. The cool thing about the benjamin moore product is that it can be tinted by them any color you want!!!! And the really really cool thing about this paint is that its $34.00 dollars a gallon!!!!! It all goes back to my saying "same $hit , different sack". Shes gonna be getting a paint job here real soon fellas!!!! I realize that enamels are not as durable but it nice when the paint is not gonna be in a high traffic area on the sides of the liner and the hull sides. the floor and cap will be taped in and i will be using the alephatic product in those areas of traffic.

well completely ignore every thing above!!! LOL! I just got off the phone with the district rep for our area and he is getting ready to paint his regulator with this http://www.insl-x.com/viewProd.asp?prodID=539 its a alephatic 2 part urethane called a urethatic. Its better than alwgrip is what he told me. It can be tinted any color you want and he can get me a huge discount at 60 dollars a gallon. So I guess I will be going with a highly durable paint system.

Started fairing today!!!!! what a pain in the @$$!!!!!!! all i can say is that its alot of work and freaking sanding!!! cut some holes in my gunwales for my hawse pipes that go thru to my cleats and hotcaoted them. I am so ready for this thing to be done!!!!

WOW!!! Its been a while!!! been helping a buddy get his kencraft together forsale. but here is some pics of the motor transom bracket that has been painted and the trim and tilt parts. I used the Moeller color vision gloss white out of a rattle can and it came out awesome! all parts still need to be wet sanded and sprayed with the moeller clear coat

rolled 2 coats of this urethatic rubber surface on the inside of the console tonight. holy cow this stuff is tuff as nails. I really think im gonna roll the whole topside with this stuff. it easy as crap to touch up if it is needed. It chemically reacts to moisture, meaning the higher the humidity the faster this stuff set off and the harder it sets off. Its some pretty cool stuff. im trying to pratice on some hidden stuff so i get my technique down.

Seems your giving up a lot of restate in the transom area for a splash board. Why not move it aft more and use a drop door to provide the necessary room for the engine when it is tilted up for transport/storage?
Kracker Jack
09-11-2013, 09:21 PM
thought about doing a drop door and it still can be done. Right now where it sits is only 12 inches off the transom whick really isnt alot. Ive mock fished the boat and have rod holders layed out and it seems that every thing is easily reachable. Im gonna mock the motor up again before I place the washboard and then I will take pics. let me know what ya think.

I am still plucking along on my sons V project. I am going to add a splash well similar to that to his. He has the fishboxes in the back that I have to work around, but shouldn't be a big deal.
Side note: I see you still have EXCELLENT taste in beer. This is a motivational Natty pic for you when you splash

Been a long time since I have been on here. I hope everybody is doing well Im sure I have missed out on alot of good stuff going on. Im gonna catch up on some threads here in the next couple days. the boat is doing good shes been in a barn all winter with 2 coats of epoxy primer and is ready for top coating. I have all my hardware for her now and my motor is ready to install, so all i need to do is paint her and wire it up. I have been doing some taug fishing and our striper season was one of the biggest dissapointments ever!!! worst striper fishing I have ever seen, all the fish hung out 15 to 20 miles off the beach past the demarcation and never showed there faces inside the 3 mile line at all. Oh well Im ready for this weather to turn so i can get this boat finished up. im posting some pics in the fishing section check them out.

Yours really is beautiful. Mine had 6 inch cleats mounted on the top of the cap. When I re did it I went with 8 inch with just the two thru bolts instead of four for a cleaner look and also moved them down to the lower lip so they are tucked in a little and are on the same plane as the mid ship and bow cleats. I love my 85, but if and when I do another it will be a hull with the separate deck and cap like yours. I'm all about simple clean and functional with minimal rigging. Love your console as well. Gonna be swapping the one I have on my skiff out and I considering just building one so I can get exacting what I want.

Bradford i purposely wanted a small short console. This boat has been very well thought out. I have fished way to many boats with ridiculously huge tall and wide consoles. I dont get it! I like to be able to have good 360 degree visual on a boat. I also simply need a tach, gps/sonar,compass,steering wheel, controls, and a small switch panel. I dont need any more than that hahaha!!! The key is keeping it simple. When i get a t-top all the electronics will go up there. People make things to complicated!

Bradford im tossed up about putting a top on it. My ultimate goal is to have a narrow t-top with a cobia tower. But for now i have to put a bimini top on it because my 8 year old daughter lives on the water with me in the summer time.

So as all of you have basiclly watched me learn the art of glassing i have been able along the way share tid bits of things i have learned from others and on my own. With all the work i have put into this boat its wise to protect your investment by not cutting corners in the end. When cut penatrations in your core material you leave it vunerable to water unless you protect it properly. Hot coating raw core edges when you drill holes is very important to keep your boat from rotting. Heres somethings i have done to every hole i drilled on my boat
http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/sandbridgeco/20150420_113044_zpsz5k93xe4.jpg (http://s293.photobucket.com/user/sandbridgeco/media/20150420_113044_zpsz5k93xe4.jpg.html)
This hole for the rod holder was treated with 2 hot coats of resin that was reduced 10% with acetone to allow the resin to penetrate the core wood easily.
http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/sandbridgeco/20150420_132722_zpsuoqt3nnq.jpg (http://s293.photobucket.com/user/sandbridgeco/media/20150420_132722_zpsuoqt3nnq.jpg.html)
Here is another pic that show a counter sink bit i purchased. I use this bit to to keep the screw threads from pulling the fiberglass up and it also allows the sealant to have room in the counter sink void and not squeeze it all out when screw your hardware down. Also you will notice the white coating, thats a polyurethane based aliphatic roof coaitng by SRC. Its basiclly liquid rollable 3m 5200.

So i got rid of the sump well that was at the stern i had so many different ideas and whats ifs at the the time i included it. For what reason im not sure i actually raised the floor up about a 1 1/2 when i redid the stringers plus im using selfbailing ball scuppers heres the well cut out. I left the lip so i can put starboard in its place.

The small details like that will make all the difference in the new life you gave your boat. One worthy of passing down to younger family members. Hard to believe it's been almost 4 years already since you started! I picked up an '83 center console last week that I'll probably just flip. If she had been an early 70's model I'd have to keep her.

Kracker, you sure got the clean look you were going for...looks GREAT!!...I'm like the question above...are you going to seal and fasten that hatch lid down...Starboard floats ya know...I was on a flats boat recently when the worst case scenario happened...and the splashwell's hatch lid floated up after taking water over the transom...filled the arse end of the boat pretty quick...I can see it happening on yours w/out fasteners holdin' that puppy in place...

The transom got bumped up to 25 inches today. Its a good feeling . 7 overall layers of 1708 makes this repair solid as a rock.

The trick to the clear bubble free 90 degree curves is to build up some thickened (fumed silica, cabosil) resin on the outside corners then lay your cloth down and wet it out like usual when you hit the corners with the bubble popper (roller) its like magic when spread the thickened resin under the cloth.

Yes it will need to be faired before primer and paint. I just barely bump grind the cloth then apply fairing compound as needed. Dont grind out to much you will lose strength. On this repair i had some thickened resin left so i slicked the repair with what i had left just to use it up.

What I have done that works really well to not sand into the 1708 is to put some 1.5 CSM down as your last layer. Just so you have something that's easy to sand and you don't have to worry about cutting the fibers on the 1708.

The last layer of 1708 is the only layer thats meets the edge were i stopped grinding. Every other layer is progressive. Meaning i have 4 layers that build up the ply veneer then 2 final layers......the first of the final outside layer falls short from the grinding by like 4 inches....the last and final layer is the only one that meets the grind edge. It lets you progressively build up your thickness with out having all the thickness at the imediate edge. Hopefully that makes sense.

I think I understand. You have 6 layers total to match the thickness of the original outer skin, including overlap.

3 total layers on the inside of the boat total about 3/16 +- thick on the inside. Only one layer wraps the outside of the transom (the seamless piece pictured)and it simply builds the thickness grinded off and completely wraps the entire repair. The other 3 layers are between the ply veneer as i build up the ply layers.

I'll be raising mine when I replace the transom so it'll be a little different. I also plan on glassing the seem between the cap and transom, getting rid of the aluminum transom cap.

Yea i never understood the aluminum cap to finish out transoms. A many rotted out due to not having proper sealant from factory. I glassed mine completely and add 7 or 8 layups of csm on top of that to build up thickness

The only thing I figure is it was quick and easy when putting together a mass produced boat with the cap and splash well being separate from the hull.

Not to mention the low profile console and sheer line.

So this boat is starving for storage and rod holders. Basiclly what i did here was build a box out of ply over top of a wellcraft benchseat. This gonna allow me storage underneath, day storage in the opening in the back and rod holders on the rocket launcher design. Think im gonna do a live well out the back with a cushion on top of lid also. Im gonna use a old pickle barrel as a mold and then glass it on the back.

Kracker Jack,
Terrific post and great looking boat.
So what model year did this boat start out as? I think I read somewhere in this epic that it was a 70's model.
I'm asking because there is a 1974 V-20 cuddy cabin posted on Craigslist for $500 with trailer and 200Hp Johnson. I plan on looking at it this week once the rain quits here. I could only hope to come close to the sweet boat your boat has become if I attempted the same makeover. You've already done the homework and gone thru the learning curve.
Kracker Jack
12-28-2015, 04:03 PM
Red it started life as a 74' cuddy . this boat turned out awesome! I get alot of people that think this boat is a custom carolina boat. When i tell them its a v20 there like "holy ****"! Have also been offered alot of money for it also. Was a really cool experience building it. My buddy laugh when we fish because i cant wipe the smile of my face whenim on it.

Kracker , im rebuilding a 76 V and converting to a CC also .. I've used your threads almost like a how to manual .. Your work is awesome ! I have a question for you ..Actually many questions but Im going to hold back .. Did you stick with polyester all the way through your build ? Bedding the stringers , attaching your gunnel ? and if so any issues ? The conflicting opinions on this has got me spinning .
We live in the same area and ill bring you a case of beer for a conversation
Kracker Jack

I used polyester all the way to the end. The boat was oroginally built with it plus my budget couldnt afford epoxy. Are you in va beach? Would be more than happy ti help you with anything you need help with.

Im with ya on the budget ..Im using polyester also ..im buying my materials from Eastern Burlap
I was about to glue and tab down one stringer this weekend but chickened out after reading all the epoxy people say don't do it ..My transom is done (in poly) and it turned out pretty good , couple things Im worried about but I think it will be ok . Anyway ..I live in VB . I've seen your boat from the street on the way to Sandbridge a few times. If your not busy Saturday could I swing by and check her out ?
Kracker Jack
12-30-2015, 09:12 PM
Shep Eastern Burlap are some stand up guys! They helped me out with alot of product info. I have found that alot of p r oblems with guys using poly is lack of prep and not using fresh greenish blue poly resin. Eastern burlaps resin fresh with minimal shelf life. The brown old garbage resins you buy from the box stores is a joke. The most important thing to do with poly is to perform wet on wet applications as much as possible.

Well fellas the v is under the knife again. 2 years when i put the t-top on it was temporary meaning i put it on to fish taugs for winter with future plans of removing it and adding a ladder in the rear to allow me to acces the top for sight casting cobia and then powder coating the frame and putting a new top on the frame. Well that time has come. I got a smokin deal on a leaning post livewell so i incorporated my rear ladder/legs to bolts to the livewell/leaning posthttp://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/sandbridgeco/Mobile%20Uploads/20170217_152644_zpsx7nnitxc.jpg (http://s293.photobucket.com/user/sandbridgeco/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20170217_152644_zpsx7nnitxc.jpg.html)

Just starting to redo my V20 CC, coming down from a 27 inboard, incredible build man, i've got so many ideas and things that I like and would like to emulate that i've seen in this thread.....Need to repower or do some significant sorting out of the merc 150 plus fuel system etc...it's basically a restore and the hull I want to start with.... would like to add a second station that doesn't fold, maybe walk-thru if need be but would prefer a true second station... concerns about being tippy, can two big guys go up top and still maintain stability?i'm in great bridge and i think we messaged some before....congrats on your build, any performance #'s with the 140?

How does the Suzuki DF 140 perform. I had the same engine on a 20 ft. bay boat and it did a good job. If I were to repower I might consider that engine. I have a Suzuki DF 175 on a 22 ft. bay boat and it does a really nice job of moving that boat around. So I know that would be a great choice as well.

My personal opinion is its the perfect motor for our boats. Is freakin sips gas! Its almost scary its so economical. It has great torque and power. The hole shot is great. It pushes the boat beautifully when loaded down with gear and coolers. If i put another motor on it tomorrow it would be the new 150 suzuki.

My t-top looks almost exactly like yours. Can you explain how you got the kingboard to conform to the arch in the the frame ,how did you attach it to the frame, how did you hide cables and wires? Do you still have a pattern you used to shape the top? Please pm me with so more info as i would really like to do that to mine. What kind of cost did you encure start to finish. thanks in advance JOHN:sun:

Kracker, she's a thing of beauty. No doubt about it. But I have one question. The new side curtains look like they are attached to the gunnals. So how do you get to the front of the boat with them up, or am I missing something?

Des here is my summer set up. It consist of 3 panels...the front panel and 2 side wing panels. The side wing panels can either clip to the console creating a dog house style set up of they can clip to gunnels like pictured creating and wall effect. When the 4 and 5th panel or the winter time panels are attached you can walk thru the side panel and wing panel. Kinda hard to explain with out pics.

This wing panel unzips from the side/gunwale panels then you unclip from gunwale and walk thru.

Ok, that's a cool design. I like the fact that you can have them in either position. Out to the gunnels they act like the breaks on a Destroyer (Breaks = breakwater) Designed to prevent waves and spray from traveling down the sides of the ship. Closed they will provide a nice sheltered area during colder weather for you and your passenger(s). Smart idea.:clap::clap::clap:

As I’m getting closer to getting going on my V21 project I know I’ll be referencing this thread ALOT so I figured I’d bump it up to make it quicker to find. Love this build.

It has been a long time since I have been in here!!! I hope everyone is doing well. A lot has happened in my life since this thread was started. Im getting ready to start a transom bracket thread on this boat. I’m gonna close the transom off and put a bracket on. Been fishing this boat pretty hard, took it on a 7 day trip down to Islamorada last November (these boats are perfect for that kind of fishing). I will post some fishing pics soon.

Having taken my old V20 to the Keys numerous times I agree that the V20 was designed and built for the Keys.
Looking forward to seeing your bracket thread.
