The wide gunwale tops really DO IT!!...I like the old CCs, but yours looks much cleaner and at least appears to have lost some weight...

I sanded my cap pieces down today and hot coated and glassed the bottom side. I figured if I glassed most of bottom now it would save me a back ache glassing it in the boat. The next plan of attack is to rough in the returns (Carling,Coaming) on the inboard side of cap, I plan on putting coaming pads all the way around the boat so how low should i make my returns? 4"? 3 1/2"? whats the measurement on the factory returns? or in boat building terms the carling. or some call it the coaming.
Curapa
05-09-2012, 09:27 PM
We call them coaming pads, never heard of carling. I would say 5" would be sufficient for most coaming pads. Have you looked into the Seadek pads? I would go that route if I were adding pads to my boat. I have been thinking about adding a pad between the leaning post and console.

I dont know what the heck they were called, but on my 250 Sportsman they were six inches. Thats i plan mine to be when i start the rebuild. I will tell you Kracker watching your build has me itching more and more to start on mine. But i dont want to start cutting until i get a couple loans paid off. I dont want to get ahead of myself. Are you planning to make your own coaming pads? Also why not abort the returns and run open gunnel caps? I seen several boats like that and i liked the look. But if you have to run wiring down the gunnels it can become unsightly. Just a thought.

If there is any offshore fishing happening on the boat coaming pads are like heaven! The most uncomfortable boat I have ever fished was a 25' Pro Sport, not only were there no pads but but the liner angle was so severe that when you hooked a big fish it felt like it was going to pull you overboard. The knees can only take so much.

05-10-2012, 06:08 AM
Yea I'm doing my own pads, actually my buddy with Petty Marine is doing them. I'm running LEDS lights and other stuff under my cap so open cap is out of the question. A Carling in marine terms is the horizontal structual band that wraps the inboard side of the cap. The coaming is non structual horizontal "trim band". I had to look it up in a boat building dictionary so don't let seem like I'm some proffesional!!!!! Lol!! Jason wish you lived closer!! Because we would be wacking and jacking on that boat already

Good to know! Most of the pads I have seen were in the 5-6" range.

I found some pads on eBay that were a perfect fit for the V21. They say "Palm Beach" on em but I could not care less. Think I paid $53 total including shipping for the pair brand new. They are between 4 & 5 inches. Consider where the pads will be placed and find pads that fit or if you build them then obviously custom fit them.

Here are some pics of my inner rail that I glued yesterday. Yes I had to cut relief cuts in it to get it to comfortably conform to the contour of the lines of the boat. All relif cuts will be soaked with reduced resin and then filled with thickened resin and covered with one layer of 1708. It will then recieve another layer when i wrap the cap core. The gunwale supports are 4 foot on center and even with no glass on the rail and with the relief cuts i can stand on it with no structual issues. the last picture is of that proud bow that I stared at for an hour while drinking some beer yesterday, couldnt help but take a picture of it.

Does anybody know what the dry weight was on a 1974 steplift? would love to get everyones opinion on wether Ive lost or gained weight on the boat? Using 3/4 ply on the floor, mostly 1708 on all my glassing, double 2x6 for gunwale supports, 2x4 for inner cap rail, and 3/4 ply for my cap, I have to ask myself if this boat lost weight after the conversion? What do you guys think?:head:

From this site under the history tab. Probably close to this (1920 LBS) but my guess is that weight was added. I know mine is than new but not significantly more than when restoration started with all the water-logged foam.

Think about the production line workers with the company looking over their shoulders/teaching their labor to save on materials where they could. You added more glass here and there because you wanted it heavy duty. They used a chopper gun for some of the liners, you hand-laid every piece and have done a great job IMO. So probably a little heavier than it was.
BTW- Kudos to you. Your progress is amazing, mine took forever. I must say I really like the ribs, one off cap and T-top. They make yours truly custom. AND
What power are you going with again??
Kracker Jack
06-18-2012, 07:36 PM
Ridge I have a family owned 135 hp evinrude that im only the third owner of its a 1979 evinrude with extremely low hours. Me personally thats gonna be enough power to get me thru a year or two. I then want repower with a 150 or better. Im basiclly dealing with what I have for now.
Kracker Jack
06-23-2012, 08:00 AM
Fellas so what do you think about me runnin a 135 hp evinrude on this build? I want it to get me by atleast a year or two. Im not expecting a ocean racer its a fishing boat. What is the projected mph with this motor? Has anybody on this forum run a v20 with with 135? 135 seemed to be pretty popular on the v20 back in the 70's. once again as always thanks for the help guys.
jasoncooperpcola
06-23-2012, 02:58 PM
I would think at least 30mph for a 135 in good running order.
Kracker are you using 1708 with a mat backing or without and where are you purchasing it?

It has the 3/4 ounce stitched backing. In multiple layer layups I've been changings the directions of the of the next layer for added strength. It's some beautiful stuff!!!!!! Kind off a pain to wet out but not to bad. I'm getting my material from Eastern Burlap of Norfolk. They are about 10 minutes from my house. I'm getting some fresh high end poly from them for 25 dollars a gallon with Gardner and my 1708 for $9.25 a yard. I go there for the convinience and decent prices.

I have found 5 gallons of MarPro Polyester Resin for $125 local.

I worked on my console tonight. Im basiclly glueing and glassing some ply inside the console in certain spot so I can beef it up for the t-top. I did learn a new trick tonight!!!!! when trying to get cloth to wrap a fairly tight outside radius you can mix your resin then pour some pre catalized resin in another container and add just a little cabosil to it to create a paintable paste, then paint the paste on your radius and the cloth stays perfectly while you wet out your cloth with no bubbles. Just an idea.:hi:
tartuffe
06-26-2012, 06:43 AM
Another tip to consider if you have air bubbles that you just cannot live with that form after you go to bed, you can go to any pharmacy and buy a hypodermic needle with a 16 guage needle that will fill em up nicely.
Are you still using the 1708?

You are looking great Kracker! Do you have power yet?
Kracker Jack
06-26-2012, 06:49 PM
I actually have power. I'm starting to think its a little small for my build. It's a 1978 family owned 135hp evinrude it has low hours and runs awesome. But oddly enough I called today about a brand new Suzuki 175 4 stroke. I hear these suzukis are pretty good motors. Some of the local crabbers swear by them. Any comments on Suzuki?

My dad had a Suzuki 140 years ago....that motor was a workhorse, never missed a beat. The only draw back seems to be service, around here the closest dealer is about an hour north. Yamaha most popular, Merc and E-Tech right behind.
The 175 would be a great motor I'll bet....new power...Im jealous!!
I've got that little 70 Mariner I'm putting on my sons V, hope to get around 25 mph or so.....he's only 11 so its all he needs. I'm kinda keeping an eye out for a good, cheap older 115-150 though

Man I just sold my other 135hp. I have a 1978 115 I will sell ya. It has great compression and runs awesome the only down fall is that it has manual trim bracket. If intrested let me know

My buddy has a Zuki 140 on his Seapro and has not had any problems out of it besides the starter going out. He's had it for over 10 years. Corrosion seems to be an issue on the older ones at least, his has some on the powerhead but nothing serious.
I feel my boat is underpowered with the 130 and it's an 18'. I top out around 38mph with the t-top, before it I would hit 41-42mph if the conditions were right. If it is in the budget I would go bigger. When mine bites the dust I will go with a 150 minimum.

Kinda nice to out run a squall in open water... I was contemplating a sea drive & a single 300 on mine...:hi: But there I go thinking again.....
Great job once again just got thru the whole thing.... almost...
Edit: I see you sold off the other Rude' But you got the Dual controls.

old sea drives are a dyeing thing, they were a good idea at one time but parts getting hard to find!
Brackets are the way to go now!

UL I thought about doing a seadrive in the beginning but decided not to due to the guys on this forum. The added "dead weight" and lack of accesible parts steered me away. With the experience and confidence I have gained from being apart of this forum I'm not scared to do a bracket in the next couple years. But for now I'm gonna stick with my single 135 and a traditional outboard setup. By the way welcome to the forum!! These guys on here are awesome and will give you a wealth of knowledge. There truelly are no stupid questions on this forum, just ask and somebody will help.co

MJ is that a sea drive or a.bracket? The one in the picture is what I was thinking of. Thought the extra couple feet would be more stable

Thanks KJ with your skilled work I figured just grab a micro
lam beam and have one fabbed up in a few days.
So what is the difference in a bracket vs. A sea drive. It was back in the 90.s since I was out on my buddies 25 Dusky. He had 2 Black Max 225's on what I thought was a sea drive. Might have been a bracket. Either way it flew in the back country down in the Keys.
The extra couple feet back there made a big difference out off shore.
Made a nice swim platform for snorkeling, good to keep everything out back and out of the way.
Thanks for the welcome.
Let's see what your ideas are for a bracket. I found a Black Max up here for a bracket. I had thought you still had the twin 135s . For as heavy a boat a 135 better suited for a 17' Checkmate. JMHO.
Check my photo bucket for a video of a 64 Tempest with a 600hp 383 stroked we built. I will get a link. Up in Caseville on lake Huron.
Wish I had the V up here with me. Just picked up a 69 Mach I.

Union, there's a lot of DO IT YOURSELF paints out there. The sides of my outer hull are gonna be Interlux perfection in a fighting lady yellow color, my bottom is gonna be a interlux VC performance EPOXY, My inner hull I'm tossed up on but I'm leaning towards rolled on gellcoat, giving the boat a work boat finish inside. I have 2 gallons of interlux epoxy primer already. I'm working on the boat Saturday and Sunday I have been working 70 hour weeks lately so I've been kinda busy at work.

Next will be glueing and setting the top cap and then glassing over the whole cap to rail structure. Im really looking forward to fairing and slicking her up.

By far the most challenging layups I've done so far!!! Tight radias with multiple inside corners and tabs. I can't wait till these inner rails are done.
I also recieved a bonus today, I traded some spreader lights for a vhf radio and a raymarine rc420 chartplotter today!!!!! It was one of those situations were my buddy wanted spreader lights and he had what I needed, he's happy and I'm very very happy with the trade.

As you can see I had to cut relief in the inner rail to get it to conform to the lines of the boat. Before I glassed the inner rail I'm hotcoating and letting it gel, then I come back with thickened resin and filling in the relief cuts and then applying my cloth and all wet on wet. This I thought would bring back the structual integrity of the wood.

Is it bad that I passed up a wreck fishing trip tomorrow to work on my boat? Even my buddy looked at me today and went "are you serious!!!!! You ain't ever passed up a fishing trip before"
Tomorrow I am going to build the last piece of inner rail which is the inner radias of the forward piece of cap. I'm gonna fabricate the rail in the morning then glass in the after noon.
I have also decided I'm going flush mount my fishfinder and chartplotter in the console. Meaning I have to build up a dash on top of my console. So I will be pondering around with that tomorrow.

Here's my bow cap temperally put up on so I can mock up my inner rail. I do a lot of wreck fishing and in shore live baiting while anchored up so as you can see I made the bow as narrow as possible so I can drop anchor from the step up platform. One thing I can't stand is when its a little snotty and you have to get up on that freaking bow deck to throw anchor. My brother said " your taking away from that Carolina boat custom look by not having a big deck up front" so looked at him and laughed and said looks ain't everything!!!!!

Here's another petpeev that I can solve while I'm at this point. Every factory boat I have ever owned has had a hole in the anchor rope locker that is only like 1/4 to 1/2 inch in diameter. And get easily blocked and clogged by debris and ultimately filling rod locker up with 3 or 4 inches of nasty a$$ water. So I drilled mine out 1 1/2 inches and then filled edges with thickened resin and milled fibers to waterproof upper level deck core.

So I decide if I'm gonna do this boat then I'm gonna do it right the first time. Even though the hull is built like a moose I also decide to recore the half rotted core ply on my console. I cut from the top because I'm gonna glass over the whole top anyway. Iwill then flip it over and patch those steering and control holes from the bottom with some progressive patchs of CSM.

On the glassing of the console/recore, sounds good to me. I need to do the exact same thing with my raised casting deck.
BTW - It does get interesting trying to stand up there while trying to anchor.
Love the anchor locker drain too. Small details make all the difference. Whaler's anchor locker drain was like 3/16" inside diameter, it stayed plugged up. On the Wellcraft, I stepped up to a 1" drain with the Perko Chrome vent over the top.

Hot coated the pre cut core material and thickened the left over resin to fill voids around the top of console (always take advantage of what you have mixed,it will save you a lot of resin in the long run)
http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/sandbridgeco/IMAG0199-1.jpg
I then let the hot coat kick then mixed my thickened resin and applied with 1/4 inch notch trowel.
http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/sandbridgeco/IMAG0201.jpg
I then put my core ply inplace and smushed it around to get an even layer of thickened resin between the ply and console skin. A big mistake I've learned is squeezing to much resin out of the bonding surface. Always keep a thin layer of resin in there or you won't get a good bond.

Here she is all glassed up with a single layer of 1708. If you look closely at the opening on the console you will see a 3/4 ply band that that wraps the opening I did this to create shear strength in the console for the purpose of the t-top getting bolted to it. The console orginally was just a mold and really had no horizontal strength. I'm also gonna glass a piece of 3/4 ply 12"x16" to mount fuse panels and battery switches and other electrical knick knacks

Kracker, I say get your console exactly where you want it then glass it down. If properly done, you will have a much more solid connection. Less vibration too. I am glassing the cap to my hull when it goes back together for these reasons.

Sounds like a idea, but were is the gas tank, and other stuff?? If need to get down in that area you will have a B***h of a time if its glassed down! How about weight distribution? Are you sure ts going were its going?? If you need to move it forward or back to get the boat level in the water, its going to be easy to adjust before mounting. But if all is well, and clear then go for it, like stated it will be nice, and stable.

There would be no reason I would have to move it after glassed in. I just want it to be solid and also less holes to drill in the floor. And it would also Carry my t-top a little better.
And also a guy on another website made the comment that the t-top is not good enough for the boat anymore due to all the work I've done to the boat.? I don't quite understand his comment.

Lots has been changed on that boat (for the better) to change the weight already, so just be sure!

MJ what's the best way to figure out the balancing act? The console now is 16 inches forward of where a stock earl 70's v20 would be. I'm almost postive that she is not to much weight forward.

10-19-2012, 09:35 AM
The weight of the console versus the overall boat will not make a difference if it is a foot farther forward or back. I would put it as far back as you can for the smoothest ride while leaving all the room you would want for fishing off the back. When we would tie up at anchor on my boat everybody (usually 6-8 people) always sat on the front gunnel at the bow.
Personally I wouldn't glass it down, just as soon as you do there will ultimately be something no one ever thought of that will require you to take it off for access. Keep the boat as customizable with as little effort as possible.

Tartuffe those are awesome words of advice, thank you . You put it in a different perspective.
I have set the console up with that in mind. I've set the boat up numerous times and have had my fishing buddies in it with me just to mock room needed. It's actually been kinda numerous with us in it at times.

I agree, but you stated way back about putting a larger or a 2nd gas tank? Thats going to change things also. If going as far back as you can, and you want a heavy 4 stroke the scuppers are going to be under water all the time.
Thats another good reason not to glass it, different engines at some point.
As to your question, unless you weight all stuff removed and stuff added, there is no way of telling till you get it to the water and float it. I would not glass it!!

Consider the amount of weight of a cuddy cabin and how far forward that is...keeping in mind the cuddy and the CC are carried by exactly the same hull...in a cuddy, if I need to lift the bow, it's easily done...If were mine I'd be looking to put some working room AFT of the console...leaving room to get from port to starboard and back at the whim of your prey...

I worked on the V today. I finally mocked up the arch for the bow cap and what a pain in the @$$. I will glue the 2 pieces together in place and let it kick off then I will remove it from the boat and radius the bottom edge then glass it up. After its glass up I will then glue and screw it back on the boat and glass it in place.

Now that I sit back and look at my boat there is not much I would change because the design is going to be about as simple as it gets and when it comes to fishing simple is the best way to go. But I would change one thing....compsite material and epoxy!!! Man I wish it was affordable for us poor folks. I would run this boat the rest of my life if I used composite material. Oh well.....back to my bloody Mary drink.

Kracker the cap looks great. The ONLY improvement I could suggest is close that transom off, install a bracket and continue your rail around the transom.
macojoe
11-18-2012, 04:52 PM
Great work!!!
I also agree with the closing of the transom and use of a bracket, nothing like a full transom to keep the water out!! At least if its not a 25" transom you can make it one now for more motor options.
Kracker Jack
11-18-2012, 07:51 PM
Guys trust me I would love to close her in!!!! I would love to bump up to a 25 inch transom. I just don't have extra money to buy another motor. I'm gonna run this motor I have to get me by for now. This is not a boat that's gonna be used all the time and only in ideal conditions with nice weather Windows. She will have a solid transom before I die! But it won't be for another 2 or 3 years. Trust after all that I've learned on this build I'm not scared to cut into a boat and start doing some surgery! Lol!!! I actually called about a bracket today but still my motor is only a 20" inch shaft and she would be swimming most of the time with a bracket plus when I do the solid transom it will be with a new 25" inch motor. All in due time fellas.

I can't wait for the fine tuning and fairing stage!!! That's were I'm gonna excell. I'm a perfectionist or atleast try to be. Yea I can't wait to slick her up and prime her. I have a buddy of mine who's a true genius when it comes to painting and he is insisting on painting this boat. He's gonna spray the VC performance epoxy on the bottom of the boat and paint the outside the boat "fighting lady yellow". I also have a cousin in Fayetteville,North Carolina who owns a auto/marine paint store and she is basiclly gonna give me the 3 quarts of Imron for the outside the boat. The inside is gonna be rolled gelcoat in a workboat style. I saw a boat today that inside was painted at the beginning of the summer and it already looks like poop!!! So gelcoat it is.

What kind of Bracket do you reccomend, Designwise if we make one.
Looks like mightr need a spool gun for the MIG.

Wow! I haven't posted on this thread in a while! I worked on the v today. Glassed last of the inner rail up forward at the bow. I plan on glassing the bow arch tomorrow and maybe glueing a screwing it in place. I also cut my recesses or access channels in my guwhale supports today which I have pictured, this is gonna allow me to run my 2 16 foot led shots from bow to stern and any other future wiring. Hope to have her done soon,it shure did feel good to work on her today.

Man the boat sure is looking nice. What is even nicer is all of the room you are going to have in that thing. That's one of the things I liked about my old V20. It didn't have the molded in bait well and fish box which gave it a lot of room. Don't get me wrong tho, I like the molded boxes on the V21 because I use one for beverages and the other for fishies without having to take the cooler. I also bring along a fish bag for those lunkers that won't fit in the fish box. But I've only had to break out the bag once and that was for a fat YFT. Fish that won't fit in the box = an awesome problem to have IMO....

Here is my project for tomorrow. I'm gonna be glueing and screwing and the tabbing this bow arch in place. This will be my last structual piece that I put into place. As you can see 2 inch course thread stainless screws will hold it in place on the port and starboard side and 6 1 1/2 coarse thread stainless screws hold it in place under the anchor rope locker. I can't wait to get this piece done and move on to the cap. She not glassed in yet and she is solid as a rock!!!!!

Well I've come up with another backyard scrap wood idea. I wanted a leaning post behind the console but don't feel like paying the big money for one and then I would lose lots of storage area. So I took my old bench seat and have built a 12 inch tall box on top of it, and by cutting a large lipped hole on the back side I can keep life jackets in the bottom of the bench seat and make a starboard covering board that will be bottom of my upper opened storage area. I will incorporate 4 or 6 rod holders in the back ( black magic marker pictured) and right below the rod holders on the back will be that upper tackle storage(black magic marker drawn on the back). I will then get my buddy to make me a low profile pad for the front. I keep my same foot print of the cockpit with added storage. And like Emeril would say "BAM"!!!!!!!

It's gonna be a single lever with seperate trim and tilt switch. I will have only a single rpm gauge, all other gauges on this boat to me are useless( I will have a audible over heat alarm). The lever is a top mount and will be placed on the right handside of the wheel. I'm still deciding weather I'm gonna build an electronics box for the t-top or mount them to the console.

I did some gelcoat yesterday. I dont understand the big hub bub about applying gelcoat? I did the easiest of application by rolling it. After consulting with my supply house they said simply apply 3 coats with pre waxed gelcoat they said like waxed resin you can apply second and third coat wet on wet with out sanding. I gelcoated my anchor rope locker and some other hard to reach areas that cant be painted once cap ply is glued. will have pics up later.

So at this point i have 2 restorations going, besides my boat Im also restoring this 1975 135 hp evinrude with 130 psi in three cylinders and 128 in the other, it is a family owned motor since new. I ve stripped the motor down of all trim and tilt parts, badges off the cowel, transom pivot bracket and lower unit im replacing all the seals, water intake screen, water pump housing and impellor kit. Im gonna also etch prime all bare aluminum and paint the motor all white. LIFE IS BUSY!!!!

I am glad you decided to sell that top. The boat is turning out nice and that top was fugly.
The repairs I have done with gelcoat were not too bad but I could not imagine doing a whole deck with the stuff while aiming for perfection. Every little spot of peel or anything else would drive me crazy. The sanding would never be done. I have been impressed with bildgekote for things like anchor and under deck storage but I wouldn't hesitate to apply gelcoat in those areas either.

Finally worked on the boat today. Glued the wash rail down and then glassed the whole cap from inner rail and into the exterior of the hull 1 1/2 inches.

I figured out a little trick today for prolonging the life of your fiber disks on your grinders. I catch myself throwing them away after they get loaded up with wax. Today I soaked one for about a minute in acetone and then stroked it with a wire brush and it came out like brandnew. Im sure this has been thought of before but I figured I'd share.

I think that's wise...a target date as priority instead of what you want to get done is a self-imposed SQUEEZE...you're on course to have a really nice CC once yer done...and that'll happen in it's own good time...I've really enjoyed watching the progress you've made!!...

X2. This is one of the longest running threads on this board and I cannot tell you how impressed I've been with your skill and determination. I just wish we lived closer so I could personally see this dream coming to fruition. Hang in there and do what you can when you can. Don't set a target date, just keep plugging along. It will happen, I promise.

well I am happy to say that all the structual glass work is done!!!!!:sly: Its a skim and sand game now. Im gonna be rolling gell coat on the top side of this boat, 3 coats wet on wet and a 4 final coat all coats will be with waxed gelcoat. It will be gelcoated in sections, the cap will be done and completed then the the side walls of the liner will be completed and then the floor. I just dont want to paint the inside,Its a pain in the @ss and the gelcoat will be alot more durable. I also have decided im not vc performance epoxing the bottom. The gelcoat is in pretty good shape and some spots will need some attention with some matching gelcoat. I will be matching and blending my own, I wanted to learn how to do this anyway. Can I call wellcraft and get a gelcoat match from them? 1974 is a long time ago! lol!

Back in 1999 when I was redoing my '74 I called wellcraft and had a good, informative conversation w one of their techs...I would think they will be able to provide color numbers for you...if not I recall seeing "Wellcraft White" on a list of available colors...well lookie here what googled up

thanks for the info reel. I dont understand why guys dont fair with gelgoat? its cheap, feathers and sands beautifully and can be thickened to your liking. at 40 dollars a gallon I ccould roll 3 coats on and still have to sand just as much if i was using a fairing compound!! gelcoat is very easy to work with it seems so far

as you can see the floor penatration have been hotcoated then one strip of CSM around the perimeter and 3 coats of gelcoat.

all holes that go thru the core ply are hotcoated and 3 coats of gelcoat are to follow. the key is to seal up all wood properly. all holes holes in the transom are treated the same. the holes on the transom are over drilled by a 1/2 inch then refilled with a fiber reinforced thickend resin then 2 layers of CSM are glassed on like patches on both sides. I then redrill my holes and its protected by a 1/4 inch ring of glass. then i put 2 coats of gelcoat on the holes. Its completely overboard but I just want to protect my core ply

Nice to have it all coming together at the same time! I'm going to have to wait a season to fix my cowling up. I wish you would go ahead and shoot it with some pearl white so you can tell us how you ended up with great results and save me some reading and sanding. Pearl white with new decals sure would look sharp reflecting those under-gunnel lights

I completely agree with you on the motor color and top side color. Im gonna try and get the color as close as possible. I have a new product Im researching now. I have an engineer at work getting some info on a rubber roof coating that is the same material used to coat fiberglass tanks and industrial equipment. They just used this product on a job and it costs 30 dollars a gallon and is uv stable comes in white, grey and light green. we will see!!!

well my ultimate goal for finishing my deck was to use a bedliner type/kiwi grip style coating for the floor and deck cap and anchor lockers and other areas. Well after many days of research I have found alephatic product that meets my specs. Its a SRC Tempco roof coating!! thats right a roof coating, its doesnt say MARINE or WEST MARINE on it. Thats because its the same product spec but just in a roofing application. I happen to find a local vender here in va beach who sells this product and he happens to have an account with my work. So after a couple minutes of talking to this rep he is amazed that my application is gonna be on a boat because he has been begging this company to market it for the marine industry. He told me its amazing that an ole country boy like me from pungo would be the one to research this product and drive the nail home as to why it should be used for boat decks. Anyway he is giving me a 5 gallon bucket of this stuff for FREE!!!!!! Yes free!!! he wants me to help him get this on product on boats. This could not only end up being good stuff for my boat but also a buisness adventure!!! So it official, all my top side will be done in a alephatic bedliner type non skid, color will be white.:sly:

Nice goin'!!...my only concern is ADHESION...in a roof application, what material is it typically applied to?...will it bond to the present gel coat surface on the floor deck of yer boat?...

The problem is going be to much adhesion!!! once applied it will take c-4 to remove it!!. they apply this stuff over rubber membrane, masonary, plastics, frp (fiberglass), epoxy and even some asphalt applications. There is gonna be no problem with sticking. This is actually the same alephatic compound as kiwi grip or gorrilla grip just doesnt have the chunky chips in it. Its a smooth surface. comes out finished with a 35 mil. thickness.

The only way I can explain it is that its a polyurethane sealant coating. kinda like 3m 5200, but 5200 is a aromatic witch is not very uv stable and not very color retentive (5200 chaulks up after a while and yellows). this compound is a aliphatic witch was made for top coating aromatics. Being aliphatic makes it a super coating which is highly uv stable and holds its color retention for a very very very long time. Theres only one down fall to this stuff, If i decide to take it off one day its gonna be impossible!!!! lol!!!

Well the day is good!!! the rep. for SRC drove literally 30 minutes to my house just to give me a free 5 gallon bucket of this coating. he is very anxious to see how my application comes out. He also mentioned if this works out the way he expects it to that he is willing to want to start trying to market this stuff for the marine industry. Kinda exciting thing to be a guinne pig. should be doing some testing on saturday afternoon over raw glass and gel coat. My liner will and side of my cockpit will be primed and painted with perfection but all my imediate deck and cap with rolled with this product.

Yes its the same stuff but doesnt have as much solids in it than rhino liner has. meaning its not as agressive as rhino lining. Its very feet friendly

Heres a prime example of a company that put a marine label on the roof coating im using on my boat. Notice it say E.P.D.M chips in it? what do you think rubber membrane is on flat roofs? you got it EPDM. Same $hit just in a different sack.http://www.tuffcoat.net/wordpress/ and did i mention the stuff im using is fire resistant, so if she catches fire were good!!!!! lol!!!

I didn't use Rhino Liner per sec. I just used that name cause everyone knows the product. For the life of me I cannot remember the name right now and I'm too lazy to look up the thread here where I talked about the product I used and it's name. The product I used is very soft on bare feet. But I can tell you that it goes on easy and once on it will take an act of Congress and the will of God to remove it. It was recommended to me by a friend that owns a marina. He told me they use it on boat decks, the floating docks and the areas around them as a non skid surface. Claimed it was better than anything else they had tried. I'm betting that you're going to be very happy with the results.

I hope so because it will be on there for a while like you said. This product im using has no aggregate in it so its gonna be nice and comfy on the bare feet.
