but will you bring a piece of starboard instead ?

Now for a real questions for the "God of Starboard"

I want to replace the forward and aft hatches on my 20.

They are 12 1/2 x 27 x 3/4 teak panel doors.

Q#1 - should I replace them with 3/4 or 1/2 starboard.
Q#2 - can I end drill 1/2 material - or is it too weak
Q#3 - Wat process do you use to get a smooth finish on the cut side? Do you sand, what grit or use router?
Q#4 - Any tips on working with starboard welcome - despite the wisecracks about commin' wirth no boat!

1. Well I don't have doors in my 75. But if they are anything like the rest of the boat, it would be wise to make them of the same size.

2. Yes you can end drill 1/2 but I would also fill the hole with 5200 when you screw it toghter for extra strenght. And do NOT over tighten the screws cause they will strip out!
I end drilled 3/8 with good results!

3. We used a router to finish my sides and they look great!!

4. Treat the starboard like any kind of wood, it uses all the same tools. Use a panelling blade on a table saw works great!
Don't be afraid of it! it is real easy to use.
Also in a tight fitting applacation, leave a small amount of space for expansion cause it does expand a bit.

Sounds like you're replacing the FLOOR hatch lids...if that is the case, you definately wanna use 3/4'' stuff

I think he is talking about the cuddy doors?? I say stay with the current size cause the way theyresses them on the side and the way that the hatch has to close. If you go thinner then I think you might run into problems??

All red dots are Starboard.

Floor covers 3/4, front bulkheads 3/4, Dash 1/4, gas tank covers and rear bulk head & doors 3/8

Message recieved, and will do on keeping repairs questions in repairs section, and summer rondevous topics in that section.

The panel doors I have are:

1st hatch is the aft door located on front side of engine splash well. On '80 outboard boats it is only way to get to bilge area below engine ....

I prefer a side opening hatch since it provide more accessability... hence the question about end-drilling - since the existing hatch uses a piano hinge...

2 nd hatch is forward anchor locker.

again - this hatch uses piano hinges -and open sideways ...

I wil take your advice - do it, and show you the results to you (hopefully) in June!

you could use 1/2 or even 3/8 for that matter on both them areas, with out any problems!
And panio hinges will be just fine!! like I said per drill for the screws and slow going not to strip out the hole. It will last for ever!!

Here is the tackle box, as you can see we used a tone of screws into the ends of 3/8 stock and it worked out great!!

3/8 Starboard for teh fuel tank hatch. Isnt that to thin ??. will it flex when walked on ???.
I myself need to replace my fuel tank hatch and never even thought of starboard. What a great idea. I was just going to screw a 2x4 or a peice of re-bar to the under side untill I could afford having the fuel cover hatch repaired.

If you're gonna walk on it it's gotta be 3/4'' Starboard...but S'board ain't cheap...you might wanna go ahead and have the repair done... :)...

Mike, in my 75 V20 the gas tanks are saddle bag and on the sides under the gunnel's!!
The floor covers you see are fish boxes built into the floor, they are made of 3/4 Starboard!

You would never be able to use 3/8 for your application!! And reel is right its not cheap stuff!! But you will never ever have to replace it as long as you live either!!

What I used here is Seaboard, the same as Starboard, but comes in more colors and even a None slip texture for 1/2 the price.

Do a search in your area to see if you can find someone that sells seaboard. It is used by all the super markets and resturants for cutting boards, doors, bathroom stalls and the uses are endless!!
