Default '72 CC never has a bilge pump?

Still preparing boat for the water, and now that motor is running, moved on to other areas.

Expected to find a bilge pump, but after removing round metal cover, was surprised to find no bilge pump. Seemed like most of the area had foam in it, and it looks factory. Only a small area for air leading to transom plug.

Hull has two scuppers, but nowhere on the outside of the hull could I find where a bilge might have exited.

Reading the posts here, and this does not seem correct for a '72. Is it because it is a CC, and most bilge related posts were for the cuddy? Were all the CC's built this way, or has the boat perhaps been modified?

If you look closely at transom picture you can see right scupper. To the right of scupper are two holes, one for tank vent and other for console filler vent. Also, tank vent line runs through battery box, where it has a "T" that vents off the starboard side.

Maybe someone has seen the boat before when it was used (stored for last 15 years). Looks like name "Fish Story" was on the side, and purchased from Ft Lauderdale area.

that does seem strange no place for bilge to drain mine is a 75 c/c *no flotation at all *my fuel vents are a lot higher than yours my rod racks are just like yours but my floor goes all the way up to them might be because mine is i/o

Thanks for the reply.

Basically I was confused by reading posts *here about scuppers and bilge (and camper tops, flotation, HIN, transom, etc).

Looking at this photo of Ken's '71 CC, and it confirms scuppers were used then, and all vents are identical except his '71 has an additional vent on the starboard side, most likely used for a bilge.

http://www.wellcraftv20.com/gallery/...2&id=IMG21

Ken's '71 has some foam floatation, except none in the rear area of bilge. Perhaps in '72 they added more foam, and did away with bilge? Comparing my '72 with Ken's '71, and I would guess about 1/2 of his rear bilge area would need filled with foam to compare to how mine looks. Also the side runs on kens '71 that have no foam appear to be factory filled with foam on my '72. No holes in rear sides of bilge (no notches at rear of stringers) to drain sides into rear area of bilge. My floor is not removed, and just estimating by looking with a flashlight.

If '72 did use more foam, looks like in '73 they went the cheaper route again, since the photo's of transom overhaul do not show any foam like my '72 has.

The photo's have cleared up a lot of the confusion.
#1 thing learned is that a V20 discussion does not mean all V20's. Probably because most do not have a old CC, so most discussions relate to those non CC V20 owners.

Thanks again for the reply. It got me checking into the details more, which then took me to Ken's photo's.

Yes there are difference from CC, Cuddy, I/O, OB, and years!

The early years there was no foam in the cuddys at all!! I think they started that in 77?? I have a 75, Also to add floation they raised the decks up and gave you less freeboard in the process.

I what you call fly by the seat guy, I have no floation and no bildge pump in my boat, so its all or nothing!! :o

Mr. Bitterman one day I'm going to go thru all these posts, maybe when I retire and pull all of your special words out. We will start our own dictionary. Your almost like those Wind Talkers in that Nicholas Cage WWII movie. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

So are we sayin' the CCs had factory foam B4 the cuddys...?or was foam added to bilge area by prior owner?....either way, no matter how much flotation a hull has, it still needs a bilge pump, although I've read some knucklehead advise to the contrary... ::)...

Now I am having doubts about if the foam is factory in my '72 CC.
Looking at History section, ad's show floatation "blocks" placed in Airslots in '73. My foam is not in block form, but looks more like flowed into for a better and tighter fit. But it has a slick outer coating, not rough like the canned sprayed in stuff has?

Other CC's that show floor removed also show foam.
These also do not look like added blocks, but more like flowed in foam.

Looking at history for '71's and last page shows feature list of the models available. I can't read it very well, but it does list foam as standard on all models except Steplift V24. That was in '71. Again, my '72 has more foam than shown from internal photo's of '71, and the pix of a '73 show less foam.

Is bilge needed if there is enough foam?
On an old, well used open seas salt water boat, seems easy enough to figure out.
Either it has water in bilge or it doesn't have enough to warrant bilge pump.
You would think that if the '72 needed it, that someone would have added one during those first 18 years of use (been in storage since '90). They did add a live well pump kit. But no bilge.

Robs if they have a bildge area below deck, someplace that water can hold and/or if they have a deck that will not displace water very quickly then I would say you need a pump. Doesn't anyone else here have that age boat to shed some light ???
