Default Replacing clutch dog 25hp 'rude ????

How hard is it to replace the dog clutch in a small outboard? Never been into a gearcase, don''t have the tools to set gear lash. Can the dog clutch be replaced without disturbing the gear alignment? Any ideas appreciated.

it can try your patience, but you can replace the clutch dog without having to reset the gear lash, you only need to do that if you replace gears or bearings(it never hurts to check it)

Spare, is it much of a job, and does it require any special tools. I ain;t skeered of a wrench, but have learned over the years that some things are best left to the pros.

Thanks,

if its a real salty unit, you're probably better off finding another unit( you tear it up trying to get it apart), if the gear lube has a lot of metal in it, gears and bearings are probably shot. Is it jumping out of gear? or just not going in all the way. The old timers used to pull the clutch and flip it over, figuring reverse doesn't get used a lot. Try and find a diagram or break down to get a handle on it before you start. Is this the one that the shifter rod goes thru the water pick up?

Yep, shifter through the water pickup. I've not drained the gear lube yet. She's won't engage forward all the way, not really a problem with jumping out of gear. My Dad's been using it, he just calls me cause its broke ;) I donlt think salt's going to bew much of an issue, the motors a 91 or 02, but pretty clean.

Thanks,

i did one like that a while ago, but before you pull it down, check the shift linkage behind the water pickup, pull the threaded coupler apart and inspect the plastic grommets(couln't think of a better discription). make sure they arnet worn, while you have the coupler aprt, try to shift the unit at the gear case by moving the short rod while turning the propshaft, if you can get it in gear both ways, you r problem may be else where

Cool, the hot wrench is one of my favorites. Hope to get into this later this week.
