This is true. I used to be a Merchant Marine and was on a 948' miltary supply ship, this ship could do 30+ kts.!

At full speed it would burn about 4,000 barrels a day!

1 barrel = 42 gallons = 168,000 gallons every 24 hrs!

Do the math, it comes out to just UNDER half a foot per gallon!

....and you think your carbed OB sucks fuel!

Here she is....she has 7 identical sisters too! I made 5 trips to the Persian Gulf on her for the first gulf war.

The shipping company Sealand had 8 of these built in the early 70's. Didn't take them too long before they realized they were too expensive to run due to fuel consumption.

They sold them to the US government and MSC (Military Sealift Command) converted them to what you see above.

One of them actually still holds the Trans Pacific speed record!
Averaged over 33kts from Yokahama to the West coast of the US, just over 6 days!
