Rap,

Use a wire line setup to drag the umbrella. *Up Here we let em out till they hit bottom and run them right there.

I also like an umbrella rigged with Clark Spoons instead of tubes or shads.

Thanks, Fillet...keep in mind we're in freshwater lakes...generally I think of wire for saltwater toothy-critters...is there somethin' I'm not seein'...is there a particular reason for wire? :)...is it because you're pullin' near the bottom, and more likely to get your rig back when hung?...

Mac...U-Rig is reference to Umbrella Rig....you might look into them up in your neck of the woods :D...

Rap,

The wire (i like Monel) gets the rig down deeper without having to use drails or trolling weight etc in front of it. There is a calculation of how many feet of wire out will get you so many feet down. I dont know how deep you are fishing, so it may be of no benefit to you. We use it in 30-40 feet of water. Since the wire gets down quicker, you can keep the rig closer to the boat.

Lots of people fish umbrellas with rubber shads and or tubes for bass. You can buy the umbrella wires and rig any thing that works in your area on it.

Fillet... if it's a matter of depth, then the lead-core will get that when we gotta get that deep...the other thing is these striper guys who are already doin' this are gettin' bare U frames as you suggest and w/8" leaders attaching 1 or 1 1/2 oz jigs w/taills, so there's lots of weight...they're sayin' at 150' behind the boat that these rigs are gettin' down 18-20' which for this time of year is plenty deep...later in summer comes the lead-core... :D

Why don't you just use hand grenades? ;)

I'm sure it would be equally effective, and a helluva lot more fun. ;D
