Hey Fugazi, I was wondering why we hadn't seen any new pics or heard from you in a while. Now with the new pics, I see why. I'm very interested in hearing some details about you repower choice. I've heard so many good things about the Suzuki/Johnson 140 Four Strokes. You're probably still in the break in period, but I'd like to hear what some of the stats are when you can supply them such as top speed, fuel consumption, etc. Did you handle the installation or did the marina (curious about warrantty issues).
Looks nice. You've got all the benifits of a new boat now without the full expense.

CB... out here on Guam there has been about 10 boats that have repowered with the Suzuki 140. One of them is a very good friend of mine, his boat is all 3/16" to 1/4" aluminum and is about 22' in length. The engine is mounted on a gill bracket/swimdeck. This boat has a shallow draft. The prop is a 15 pitch, 13 1/2" diameter. at this point after about 50 hours the average fuel consumption is around 3 + gallons an hour. From what I hear everyone is reporting the same.

Now my reservation is... I drive this boat alot and it once had a 200 hp Mariner... we use it primarily for taking divers out. This boat can take more weight than mine so we can take 6 divers (plus me the "Boat Man") 24 tanks, 7 coolers (one of them with ice and drinks), water, ice and fish.

Before with the 200 I could cruise in at the end of the night loaded at 4500 RPM with throttle to spare to 5600. With the 140 I am at 5400 RPM and about tacked out. I will say I like the 140 and because of my exposure to it I am saving for a 225 to replace the 200 Merc on mine. But because I go out long distances, have tendency to catch a lot of fish and have been in 8 foot chop coming home, I feel the need for the horsepower.

On a different boat that another friend of mine has, he repowered his 20' fiberglass boat (I don't know the make) with a Suzuki 140 (I have not been on this boat). He has propped it with a 17 pitch 14" diameter prop and is very satisfied with the performance. He also is claiming 3 + gallons an hour at about 30 hours so far. He does not take out any divers like we do, he only trolls.

Hope this helps with some of your curiosity about the Suzuki/Johnson four strokes. Guam is a very good testing ground for this sort of thing... if there is something venerable it will be discovered fast here because of our harsh saltwater environment.

I got the engine from Ed's marine in Virginia. ...check out their website. They are great to deal with and pulled no punches. The sales tax was only 2%. I'm still in break in period (10 Hours). I just got one of those Navman gas meters and am still toying with calibrating it to the tenths of a gallon. I'm looking to load the boat up with people (two more) and do a real test under normal sea conditions. So far I've just fished on my own. My only real complaint about four strokes is that they are sluggish and are not as peppy as a two stroke. the power curve is in the higher RPM ranges. This is normal, as per dealer and others who have a four stroke. other than that I'm happy with the engine.

Oh yeah... the warranty is for three years, honored by any OMC dealer.....and a buddy of mine from the marina slapped it on for me for $200 and a case of beer.

Nice. I've heard from people that four stroke motors in general were sluggish in the mid-range power band, but I wanted to hear from someone that has more direct info. Keep us posted on the progress.

Hey Fugazi, When do you wanna go ;D?

I just figured out that the gallery "chalked out " was yours. Since I joined V20.com, I thought that the boat on the homepage was yours. That boat was for sale on boattrader when I was looking for my V20. It was an 88 hull with a 150 hp motor also. I thought you had sold it off to some brokerage and had left V20ville.

Anyway, glad you are back online with your repowered and restored rig :) .

Counting you, myself, and my buddy jaysea there are at least 3 Long Islanders with V20's on the site. Probably a bunch more that are unaccounted for. Maybe someday we can organize a V20 tournament or something.

I'll bet that after you have broken in your new motor,and gotten a handle on all your performance data, that you will want to install that stingray hydrofoil from your old motor. I think that whaletail will give you the boost you are missing.

Nah... I didn't sell off to a broker. I was just tooling around quietly, fishing what was left of the fluke season and goin' striper fishing. Yep.. it's the same hull off from boat trader.com. I'm out at Moriches and I see a few V20's out there... center consoles, cuddy cabins and some v21's as well. Hopefully there will be more long islanders showing up to the site as well. good to hear from you.

Nice new motor Fu. I went the other way and got myself a nice used noisy VRO off of Ebay. I like to deafen my buddies at WOT, and using fuel like it's air makes me feel like I really got somewhere. ;D
