Default Hey Spare - choke repair?

Hey Spare,

A while back, I asked if there was hope for getting a part to fix my choke or should I just find a long cable and rig it up as a manual choke.

You asked what carb I have - here’s the info. on the tag on the carb:
MerCruiser
MCM 170/470
1389-8489

Any suggestions/direction would be very much appreciated.

Thanks - Scott

Hey spare, find me a house for sale by you, really close to you , I'm moving there, I will be the one with the wellcraft , you will be my best friend for sure I'm not ready to move yet but I'm thinking about it. Just need a good driveway so you can work on my boat in comfort. I will supply the lunch. Or you move to New Jersey , I will find you a home very very close to me,maybe we can share the same driveway, wouldn't that be great? For me it will be. Lol I will supply the lunch.

It’s electric. Can get some pictures of it if helpful.

loosen the three screw that hold the choke coil in place(round black plastic thing). Pull teh flame arrestor off so you can see the choke flap. Advance the throttle just a little so theres no binding on teh carb linkage. With teh engine dead cold, turn the choke coil till its the least amount of tension to close the choke. You're in a cooler area, so you want a little tension, down here, i back them all off. When you go to start the engine cold, advance the throttle twice, then pull it back to a high high idle position, if it doesn't start, pump the throttle twice again and try to start. Don't pump the throttle while you're spinning teh motor over, it will flood it

Thanks - I’m under the impression from the shop that did some work on the outdrive that the choke is bad. When I do the adjustment you describe, will running it on the earmuffs to test if it’s working get it to temperature OK?

Running on the hose is fine. Remember, you dont have a fast idle circuit, you have to fast idle it yourself. DOes teh choke have a wire hooked to It?

There's a ground wire terminal end under one of the three screws. I just assumed it did, but didn't confirm that there's a potentially hot wire to it. Took a picture that only shows the ground. Can look again when I'm at the boat.

What does it affect if there's a wire to it?

Also, if the test shows the choke not opening after adjusting and running, any reason not to pull the cover and inspect inside?
