Ugh. Hate to say it but chances are good you harmed the impeller. I did the same thing 2 years ago. Worked good on the muffs because of the hose water pressure but almost no pee stream at all when in the tank. Brand new impeller was shot and had to be replaced. It's an easy fix, just a PITA.

Listen to Destroyer - chances are REAL good that you damaged the impeller. I did that with a brand new impeller years ago with my I/O and immediately had overheating problem - another new impeller and it all went back to normal.

That'as funny because that's exactly what happened to me. (And I've also been at this for a long long time). Shut off valve at the end of the hose, forgot to open it, turned on the hose and overheated the engine. Terrified that I had killed it, but ran compression tests etc. and no real damage except for the impeller. Now I NEVER put a hose on the engine that has a shut off valve at the end of it... Ya, it's more work and a little more messy walking from the faucet back to the boat, but well worth the peace of mind knowing that it will never happen again.

Destroyer I'm sorry to say that I'm happy to know you the same exact thing only because I thought I was losing it, that said I'm going to remove the real nice shut off lever valve cause I don't want to do that again

I use a shut off, but I have a 10 foot hose I put between the muffs and the shut off. That way I can loop the hose up over the stern and have the shut off sitting on the gunwale. I get in the boat, turn on the water at the stern, walk up, and start it. Then I can adjust the valve so I don't waste so much water.

I would definitely replace the water pump. Also paint the new impeller with Marvel's Mystery Oil so if you do this again it won't hurt it. But a water pump is cheaper than a motor.
