Default Changing 170 outdrive impeller

It's been too long. Can you guys give me the short form tutorial on changing the impeller in my 1985 Mercruiser 170 outdrive. I'll probably recognize most of what I need to do when I get in there but I recall that the throttle lever needed to be in a particular position (I think it was forward) and I need to drain the oil before taking it apart??

Comments appreciated.

Thanks

Thanks Tunnaman - when nobody posted that's what I did. I don't know why I didn't think of that, I've researched a lot of other stuff that way.

Sometimes you have to go through a few to get a good one but they're there.

Cool

I didn't chime in because I don't have an outdrive. Most of the guys here run outboards also. If you had asked about an outboard that would have been a different story I'm sure.. Glad you found your answer.

leave it in forward gear, the shift hardware all aligns in forward gear. Drop the lower unit, dont forget the bolt under the trim tab. R%R the impeller. Prop turn counter clock wise viewed from the rear to keep it n fwd gear. Spin the prop to get the splines aligned, Bolt back up, fill with gear lube from the bottom

It took so long to get a rebuild kit that I'm not sure about some of the stuff and the kit has a ton of extra parts (must be for several versions of the pump).

Can anyone email me a blow-up diagram of the Alpha 1 Gen 1 with the water pump? All I'm finding online is Gen 2.

Thanks Spare - I recall the keep it in forward gear part now.

Thanks again guys:

Tunaman - the diagram kept me on the right track reassembling the pump.

Spare - I'm glad you reminded me about turning the prop counterclockwise to line up the spline and hold it in forward gear - went together very smoothly.

Got it back together and ran it on the earmuffs for a half an hour and it purred like a kitten and held about 140 degrees on the temp gauge. This is the one that was running for 20 minutes and losing RPM until it died.

I can't wait to get it on the water for a real shake-down but it looks like it's fixed.
