Default 1977 V20 with Evinrude 140 outboard 2017 project begun

I picked this boat up in Florida over the weekend and drove it back here to Virginia where it is in the driveway. My goal is to get it ready to use the way I want it by fall and modernize it. The transom and floors are good but the seat wood under the cushion on the pedestal was rotten so I junked them and ordered two new molded Wise chairs that swivel and have snap on/off cushions.

It has an EZ load trailer which towed it home easily at 65 mph and when I got home it took about 30 minutes to clean it up. I had the dealer put a 2500 pound strap new winch on and it has new tires and wheel bearings are good...my infrared non contact thermometer I brought down told me that..has bearing buddies and was lubed for the trip and they put all new set of lights on as it was easier for them..same price.

It is simple with never many electronics and I like the shape and lots of cockpit space for my two Borzoi and me. No overnights, just day use on the big rivers and ches. bay at times around me.

I pulled the stuck teak hatches out by dropping a bolt on a rope through the hole then levering up with garden tool handle and will let them dry and then shave slightly with sander then refinish. Unbelievable shape for thick, well braced teak panels that will work well. It goes into winter storage Wed. so am about done with what I can do. Big cover for it and in the spring the list of what I will do will continue. New windshield braces en route as the old ones look cruddy and not strong enough with age. One of the tasks will be to trace the wire harnesses and identify, label then decide what I want. One battery and I plan to put two in parallel. I will look for a gps/map chart plotter with depth sounder as well so have one instrument and only one transducer, get speed from the gps and depth plus map. I doubt I will put a tach on the engine as it probably isn't actually useful, just nice. I want to keep it very simple. Have an 11# claw anchor and chain and rode for it already and dock lines and life jackets en route for others. I have my own stuff from my sailboat racing days for 20 plus years. The hull is terrific and where I did cleaner wax it it did pretty well. Spring task on that.

Manuals for motor will be here in next day or so and I can start figuring what approach I'll take there over the winter. I believe I have two 20 gallon side saddle fuel tanks and I think I'll want at least ten or twelve more so may carry an extra poly red tank on board with it's own fuel hose nipple to the motor. Never fun filling tanks from 5 gallon jugs while on the water.

Happy it is solid enough, tows well and that the trailer is in terrific shape. The rest is: take enough apart then restore what needs it and make good choices.

Not planning to add photos here as the limits are too small for clarity but they will be at my smugmug site which anyone can see....

here it is: from the morning I picked it up as is to an hour ago.

We will see.

Default Barry, et al

It is in good shape. I have two new seats for it, redid the teak already which turned out beautifully and will do the electrics this spring but keep it simple, add a gps/chart/depthsounder 7" unit and not bother with tach and speedo. Making good progress and have cleaned the trailer up and resprayed some of the zinc coating on it. Has a cover from a used billboard with white sign side up and that has her stored for the winter. One of my back bedrooms has several boxes of items for it for spring, seats, etc. and none is a huge project. The new seats fit on the existing posts. I'll compound and polish it at home in the driveway in spring where I can plug the new polish applicator and buffer in and let electricity do the work. Where I've done it a little manually it came back quite well. Next week will go get the trailer titled and licensed then after that the same for the boat now that all the paperwork is here from the Florida dealer. It towed very easily from Florida up I 95 for 617 miles bringing it home. I have two suvs, one a 2008 TBSS with big Corvette race engine, billstein shocks, 4:11 rear end and huge sway bars and tranny extra coolers built by gm performance to run the Nurburgring track and it handled it with east at a sedate 64 mph home. It has two new radial trailer 14" tires on it that the dealer had put on it 25 miles before I bought. Bearing hubs have bearing buddies on them and were nice and cool trailering it up from Florida. I think is is going to end up a really good boat for the way I'll use it here in Virginia. Some cosmetic gel coat crack work to do but very little and normal for the age. Very satisfied at this point. You can see why so many people like this boat. Lance Pearson

I'd keep the tach...but then...consider the individual responding.
