Default shift shaft adjustment for 135 johnson

I was helping my neighbor repair a shifting issue which turned out to be corrosion between the double O-rings on the shift shaft. The shift shaft was completely removed during the repair and we kind of took a best guess at the height for the reinstallation. I think we are really close because in shifts into reverse very well, but it seems to slam into forward and only with a bit of throttle. It makes noise and seems like it just doesn't engage completely in forward. My question - how much of an adjustment should be made? Is this a 1 turn adjustment or 4-5 turns? Also which direction should the shift shaft be turned? thanks for the help

My only experience with shift problem like you are talking about was the shift cable adjustment. when you take the cable off, the fitting on the end can turn, lengthening or shortening the travel. this can cause the problem of just not quite getting into a gear.

The adjustment isnt a x amount of turns out kind of thing. You have to measure from the flat mating surface that mates against the midsection to the center of the bolt hole in the shift shaft. I dont have my book in front of me right now, but need to know what year engine, and what shaft length. A 135 could be an old crossflow, or a newer looper.
