Teak speargun build out of scrap teak
After doing alot of spearfishing for tautog this year in dirty water of the chesapeake bay i decided my 70cm gun was just to big to shoot these fish in tight quarters. So i decided i was gonna research and then build my own teak reef gun. The total length of the gun is 30 inchs from butpad to muzzle. 34 overall with spearshaft included. I here are the pics of the process.
 Laminating the blank with west systems  Blank being held true during lam process with 4 ft level and clamps  Drawing out buttpad,fitting handle and trigger gaurd  Tenons cut and handle fitted. Getting ready to set up the neptonic reef trigger mechanism.  Handle epoxied on barrel and trigger mech and pins in place with spearshaft fitted  Shaping up! Band pockets carved out,band holes drilled, handle shaped up.  Heres how she sits now. Kinda put this gun on hold so i can finish up the boat. Shes gonna be a sweet little gun. You notice the dowel plug in the side of the gun.....definitely made out of scrap!!!! Hahaha!! Last edited by Kracker Jack; 12-29-2014 at 07:01 PM.

nice, your goiing to enjoy that. i always did better in close quarters with a poke pole. don't know if you've used a wooden gun before, but they float. i found out the hard way. laid one down th get a lobster out of a hole, turned around and it was gone. buddy on the boat saw it pop up and thought i was signaling him i was in trouble. i came up as he was trying to get his gear on to come get me.

Phat when i put the gun together completely i will then float test it in water and ballast the gun as needed to make it neutral bouyant as need buy drilling holes and adding lead and plug holes with dowels to hide lead plugs. Or else your right it will float. Alot of guys like negative bouyant. Im sure i wont get it perfect but i will try.

Lookin good man!!
One thing I noticed though that scares the piss outta me is that separate handle. You may want to rethink a dowel through the back side of it where the two parts meet. If it ever separates that butt will come screamin back at ya. Thats how Sherri Day got that permanent beauty mark under her eye. Crushed her Ocular cavity in the process I believe as well...

Ssiredfish this gun is unlike a pipe gun (rail style) gun. This is a 2 piece gun barrel and handle. The handle is just to serve as ...well a handle. Everything else is a seperate entity. Meaning there no band pressure on handle like there would be on a rear handled pipe gun thst has the trigger mech built into the handle and then the handle pinned to the barrel. Hopefully im not being confusing. I would love to come down and spearfish with yall sometime i always enjoy watching yalls videos on youtube. We should have a triggerfish and mahi session popping up on video soon if my buddy ricky ever starts the editting.

Ssiredfish i see exactly what you saying about the handle!! Now i feel like an idiot. Upon firing its gonna pull band energy off the muzzle and smoke ya in the dome! I will dowel that handle now. Im also gonna carbon fiber the trigger gaurd and tie it into the barrel that way also. Thanks for the advice....sorry i wasnt picturing what you were trying to say.

Man that's some beautiful work!
Since we're giving advice, I recommend ballasting to the point where it is slightly negative with shaft in and slightly buoyant with shaft out. As long as you have line attached the shaft will always keep the gun from floating away. Still good practice to put your arm through the band after firing though. Also the weight should go forward along the barrel. I didn't put enough weight up front and my spear tip tries to float up while I am lining up a shot. May be less of an issue with the shorter gun.
