87 v4 Looper in Florida land of the heat and humidity. I found a lot of sand and silt on the back of my thermostats, I know this bastards are a must in cold country, question is do I really need them in Florida? Can I remove them and run without it or will I fowl the plugs whilst idling for long periods?

LEAVE THEM IN! More engines get ruined by people taking the t-stats out than anything else. Make sure you have the black plastic housings(not the white ones), and that the seals in the heads are still good. Without t-stats that engine will never idle right, will foul plugs like no tomorrow, and end up sticking a ring. Loopers need to run about 155-160 at an idle, but cool off to 120-140 when running, so also make sure the throttle valve is working to. And the 85-87 small bore engines seem to be even pickier about running at the exact temp than the 88+ large bore engines.
