| Thinking through the right motor choice

Why not - so the 96' V21 was rated up to 200 hp..........but But 200 hp outboards in 96' weighed around 450lbs max.....NOT well over 520 lbs. So, I'm thinking forget the Evinrude DFI, or HO......too heavy because the boat wasn't designed for that much weight. Not on the original standard transom anyway. Now thinking the " LITTLE " etec 200 at 433lbs or the 175 Opti might be better choice. I may just keep " talking " and run the current 150 looper forever too. That could also happen. |

If your old carbe looper is in good shape and you boat less than 200 hours a season, why even consider upgrading. The old 60 degree loopers are some GOOD engines(the new ETECS are still built using the same basic foundation for the small block 150-200's), and if you don't use it at least 100 hours a season I don't see how teh fuel savings would even be a factor in offsetting the cost. And with your old tech looper, it is something that most anybody can work on without a high dollar scanner.

bgreen---as I had told you--If I had to redo my engine choice--I would have done the 175 preferably or 200 in the small block version for the boat. My 200HO weighs 496 with the longshaft. That is why the smaller block and that either of those small blocks will push that boat in the 40's. My 88 V-20 was rated for a 235hp.
