Default What is this engine 200 'rude

so I may be able to do some trading on a 200 evinrude v-6

so far I don't know the year... looper or not or anything else but I do have a pic
I'd like to be a bit better educated when I talk to the owner

I assume that this engine would be quite thirsty compared to my 78 merc 1150 but maybe not at the same cruise speed???

What do you guys think? Can anyone tell the year by the photo? How bad should I want this?

I personally wouldn't want it very bad if it was me. That pic appears to be of a late 70's cross flow engine judging from the paint scheme on it. The cowling is to short to be a looper, so definately a crossflow engine. They are good engines, but thirsty. In modern HP ratings it would be about a 150-175HP outboard.

ok so def not a looper... I was guessing late 80s on the paint but I really had no idea .... how do you think it would compare to the (1150 also a crossflow) in the mpg dept.... think I should just forget it or try to get it cheap.

nearly double the hp is tempting but I'm def not sold on it

I doubt you will be getting anywhere close to double the HP...like Ferm said 150hp vs probably close to 140hp out of the Merc.

TowerOfPower Mercs were notorious for putting out more power that the sticker showed, at least in my experience.

hmmm I sure hope you're right.... I figured my old motor to be about equal to a modern 90 hp.

I guess the gps will tell the story... I've pretty much decided not to mess with this particular j-rude... I'd like to get more power (of course) but I wand mpg's and I don't think an old crossfllow j-rude would be even as good as my crossflow merc???

How come there is a difference in horsepower over the years. Isn't it rated at the prop? Or are our hourses bigger now than they were in the late 80s.

The engine in the pic is of a late 70's engine which is flywheel rated. In 86 when the ywent to propshaft ratings, this same 200 went down to a 150 XP.
