My buddy has aquired a 1984 Johnson 35 HP outboard that had been sitting for about 10 years with the carbs off, we have replaced the water pump and have it running great, starts on the first or second pull every time.
When running on the earmuffs, water is comming out of the seam between the gear case and the where it bolts up. Is this normal or is something leaking that shouldn't be? Thanks in advance Gents.

So long as it is pissing out the tell tale good and strong you should be alright. If this engine has been used in the salt, I would reccomend replacing the T-stat in it as OMC used some early on that had regular steel in them. I know my 80 model that I have had one in it and it was in pieces when I replaced it. The new one will be stainless.

It is peein like a race horse...we did notice that it seemed to never get up to operating temp, so I'm sure the thermostat is toast, we'll stick in a new one.
Thanks FERM.

My old 70hp Evinrude did that peeing thru the LU seam. Ferm is it from the water coming from where the pickup tube meets the impeller housing? Just more pressure than it can handle?

My old '86 150 Rude did it and the '89 200 Johnnie I got does it...as long as it's not excessive and as Ferm says, is pissin' good, it's OK...

Basically the pump can push more pressure than the seal in the water pump housing can take, and also the water discharge from the exhaust goes down through the midsection so some of that will blow out the seam as well.

I always believe a "leak" can flow both ways...when a motor that does what we're talking about is sitting at rest w/no pressure from the pump, does anything seep back into the motor?...if so, does that cause any problems?...

No, because the powerhead sits above the water so the pressure isn't strong enough to push against gravity.
