| Willy's Screwed

Well guys, took my brother and friend out flukeing. Caught a couple of nice keeps and then the drift died. Decided to move outside the bay and run down a few miles to a spot I know. Cruising along running like a top. Then a sudden loss of ower and a loud hard knock. Shut her down right away, pulled the engine cover off, got a hole in the block big enough to put a ping pong ball thru. Just got done putting close to a grand into all the maintenance on this engine which had now 215 hours on it. 96 Evinrude 200. Screwed. Got towed in for an hour and a half by TowBoat.

Oh man! That's terrible news Willy. I'm so sorry to hear that. I have that same year motor, but the Johnson version with around 400 hours on it. Were you premixing? If not, could have been the VRO pump failing. That same thing happened to me on my maiden voyage a few years back with the Wellcraft 250 that I eventually sold to Skools. Was cruising along nicely and same thing as you; heard that knock and engine had shut down. Pulled the hood and found a big hole in the block. My stomach dropped down to my feet.

What the? I hate that. I purchased a rebuilt 200 Merc thet let go twice, no windows in the block. Even had a Merc Master Tech put it on the dyno to get the jetting right, timing, the whole 9 yards.. We sized it up right to make sure it was ready the second time. Still stuck a piston at WOT after 20 hours breakin time. Never put a finger on it, gut tells me a bad carb. I feel your pain, bad stuff happens to good folks. Sometimes sharing the carnage helps to lessen the blow. You will be back to riding in no time. No hill for a climber... |
