Bought a sewing machine to replace the front isinglass on the Bertram and thought I would try my hand at making a front panel for the V 20. Not to bad for my second project. I still need to complete the side panels.

Rwilson,
The machine is a Sailrite LZ1. It was expensive but I've already gotten my money back and the support from Sailrite is great. The front isinglass replace on the bertram would have cost around $600. I'm still learning and getting the hang of this stuff but getting better with every project. Thanks for the kind words Joe7670 I'm going to start on the side curtains shortly. The bimini top is a bit over size so the side curtains will be larger (around 60"). While I had the bimini top off I put zippers on all sides. I sewed a zipper on the rear or transom side so I can add a boot or cockpit cover (maybe next year when $$$ is in hand).

LOOKS GREAT!
You have on hand a money maker there and you already know what everybody else is going to charge. Ought to be a calling for work like that up there. I know it's hard to find a good fair price down here.

Inaforty-
If you don't mind me asking what the machine set you back? And did you give the sewing a shot with a regular machine first? Interested in the start up cost for making curtains as in the long run you can save yourself a ton of cash with a little work. Thanks. -Svence

Thanks tsubaki!
Karen and I just enjoy the heck out of this boat. The cost of doing canvas work is $$$ but it is time consuming work not mention the cost of the material. I have a few people at the marina that I might do jobs for. I would love to start a side business.

Svence,
I think I paid about $1000 for the machine with the additional power wheel kit (extra needles etc etc). I looked at older Singer machines and off brands but decided to go with the Sailrite model. If you have experience sewing then an older machine might work for you but for a novice I think the Salirite is the way to go. My In laws have an older Singer in Yuma AZ. They told me we could have it but the shipping and cost of having someone adjust and time the machine would off set the savings. I did pay for a few tutorial videos ($5) from Sailrite to get some additional help with replacing the isinglass on the Bertram with the smiley zippers. It was worth every bit of $10. The cost for the 3 panel front isinglass with was about $150. This incuded zippers (for all sides),basting tape, 3/4"binding,coil zippers for center opening, 20 gauge isinglass, snaps, etc etc.

Svence,
Good luck with your projects. There are a few videos on cushion making on U tube that might be of some help to you. There is some info somewhere on sewing piping etc. Here is one of a custom cushion video.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DCADkbAqqMQ Here is a video showing Sailrite machines http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JVctef6IRlo
