Scuppers/Bilge Pump Question

Finally got the boat out today the new motor runs great a lot more bottom end to it. I had 2 problems today, one I have the ball scuppers and they became clogged and would not seal with Maple tree helicopters a lot of back wash coming in to the boat so I figured I use the bilge pump to help I open the plate and drained some of the water down the bilge .........Bad Mistake I had the pump clog like wise . Some body recommended a high quality easy to clean on the water scuppers and what size pumps are you running.................I got nervous today

The only good news I can think of is those copters off the trees only happen once a year...but seein as how it could sink-o de boat-o, is there a way to insert a screen inside the scupper opening where the water enters..and same for pump intake?...

I was going to put those ball type scuppers on mine and the fellow at the marina told me they clog a lot and have to be cleaned out.
Do they make a set that the housing unscrews so you can clean them?

My Scout has those type scuppers. I can't report on how effective they are yet, but they do unscrew so they can be cleaned or to change the plastic ball.

I use to live with them copters and the best thing you can do is cover the boat when not in use!

I love scuppers But i hate them also! I wish they could make a door that closes and opens like it should!

I've looked at them as well, but still using flap type. The covers of the bal scuppers should just twist off and you can easily clean them.

That said, something sounds wroing if water continually is coming in your thru hulls regardless. I think in any V20 year they ultimately either go up to the floor, or into the splashwell. Mine are slightly below water level for splashwell drain, but even with non-functional flap scuppers last year, worst case I had 2" or so of water in the splashwell under normal conditions.

May be more wrong there than just your ball scuppers sticking open...

I pulled out several pounds of copters they were so packed in the scuppers we had to remove them to clean it out, the ball was being held wide open by them, I learned my lesson about them..................

There is a company that make the ball type scuppers that is easily cleaned by removing the housing without unscrewing it. I'll find out who they are tomorrow. Second option is a chainsaw to remove the problem permanently is ya get my drift. Third option is a tent. I just erected(haha,he said erect)one to keep the dang palmetto leaves outta mine. Probably gonna take my own advice and go with option 2 before the "H" season comes around again.

Sorry for the delay. TH-Marine Flow Max ball scupper is probably about the best on the market right now. Oh yea pumps,running 1 2500gph(main), 1500 &750gph(backups)2 separate float switches and a high water alarm which should be standard on all boats imho.

I bought a set of the TH-Marine Flow Max ball scuppers from the big E today, I like the idea that you can clean them in the water...............
