Default Engine Advice

Ok... here's the deal. I have a 1991 200hp Johnson VRO. It was professionally rebuilt and installed in 2001. Since then it's had very low hours on it.. (less than 150). It runs sweet and will push the V to 50-55 GPS without breaking a sweat.

I also have a 200 hp Merc that's sitting on a boat that I'm going to part out and bring to a trash transfer place for it's final rest. The Merc is also a sweet running motor. I got it used and have no idea of the hours on it, but I've never had any problems with it other than a bad heat sensor.

My question(s) are: Is the Johnson a good motor? Would it be advisable to swap it out for the Merc? Should I sell both of them and buy a Yamaha? Whatever the answer, how do I convince my wife it's a good idea?

N0 brainer for me, Destroyer..first off, it's ON the boat mounted w/proper controls and you say runs sweet, so I assume no probs...the Merc has been sittin and has problem history(although minor)...Is there a particular reason you wanna swap em out?...

I'd roust up Bigshrimpin here and see if he has any interest in the Merc and hang on to what you got...50-55...wish mine did...

Keep the JOHNSON and sell the MERC. OMC parts are much cheaper than MERC or YAMAHA. I know YAMAHA makes a good engine, but they just aint my cup of tea per say. Plus parts for the imports are about double or more than US stuff, and the aftermarket doesn't have alot of support for the imports as compared to the US. And to top it off I believe in supporting the US whenever possible.

Default Fish wait for no man...!

Hi Destroyer,
Fish Johnny till he drops. Switch to the Merc. when he does. Then take both the time and money you would have spent and divide it as you see fit between a stash for the at some point new Yammy and your wife.
The only losers here would be the fish you land!
Besides this is not best the time of year to be pulling perfectly good running boats apart.
Your V looks great. The Teak hatches really stand out.

Thank you for the compliment ... Actually what you said is about what I had decided to do. Winterize it again, then pull the Merc off and put it to bed..Keep it as a spare. It's really a sweet motor and has never failed to get me home. And you make a lot of sense about not the right time of the year to pull the boat apart.. although really I was thinking about doing it after the fishing season.
