88 v20 with 2000 225 suk ran wide open and ff said 28mph, gps said 38mph, and dash speedometer 60mph... prop turned about 5800 rpm..who knows how fast but i estimate around 50mph.. boat ran great but it will take me a couple of trips to get used to the trim tabs

Good to see you got it on the water. IMO you cannot rely on fish finders or the water pressure type speedometers for accuracy. I hate to say it but the GPS unit generally doesn't lie unless you are having signal issues.

i hear you about the gps but there is no way its a 38 mph boat.....the unit did not seem to be functioning correctly(would not goto waypoints).. i was wondering what the max rpm should be for this motor.. my old boat did around 42mph and i would say i was going considerable faster than that

5800 sounds about right but I'm no expert. Also at 5800 w/ 225hp you were likely going faster than 38mph. Are you sure it was not 38 knots? That would be roughly 44 mph.

it was definitely on mph but like i said i need to learn more about the gps/chart plotter....it seems all owners of v20's with a 225 reach speeds in excess of 50, unless they are weighted down by lots of custom options..i should have it out again this weekend so we will see

I'm assuming you mean a SUZUKI and not a suk. If so then you should be able to flat out boogey with that engine if propped right. She is a lightweight 2 stroke coming in at 470 pounds and it will push an honest 225HP(maybe even better) at the prop. The 225 SUZUKI is every bit as strong as a 225 EVINRUDE or JOHNSON, but gets better economy. WOT range for that engine is 5000-5600, but I would prop it on the high side of this range. 5800 if lightly loaded would be fine as you don't want to lug that 2.7L engine to hard as that will kill it.

You stated that you had to get use to the trim tabs--did you have it trimed down by chance--that will kill your speed for sure. You should definitly get more speed than that.
I get around 53 mph at WOT with a 200HO E-tec--no trim tabs. Sounds like you are pitched right. Trimmimg it down will kill speed in a hurry for sure.

I would hit around 42 to 45 in a little chop in when I had my V-20. It had a 1994 150 hp johnson so I guess you should be able to get more out of that motor. Oh, my hull was a 1984.
