Default The Cod Father part II

Braved another trip for Cod out of Montauk NY this weekend... I am a glutton for punishment it seems. Five of us made the 3 hour drive out there...Had a PBA card taken from us from a female deputy sherriff for 79 in a 50 zone....never thought it would work but luck was on our side...Got there around 10:00 PM with boat leaving at 3:00 AM. Temp was about 12 degrees with winds BLOWING to 35 knots.....I mean it whipped right through your clothes.... Hit Liars Saloon (there motto is Montauk, a drinking village with a fishing problem) for a few hours and got on the boat at 2:00 AM.

Boat made its first set about 5:00 AM....when one of the mates came in from shucking clams (crustiest old salt you ever saw) and said "man its bad out there" I knew we were in trouble....

Wind was still blowing pretty good but we all made it to the rail....nothing coming over the side, after about 30 minutes I turned around and me and one of the guys in my party were the only two left standing there.....

warmed up the hands for a few minutes inside and once the sun came up a pretty slow steady pick started....Full moon tide was ripping and we needed 30-36 ounces to hold bottom.....hard for me to feel fish with that kind of weight but managed to catch a few.....tide and wind subsided steadily throughout the day was able to get down to about 20 oz's and get a few more.....everyone managed to get 3 or 4 keepers mixed in with shorts and doggies. Not a great day but I have plenty of cod dinners in my future.

I'm definitely done for the winter....these two trips were my first experience with winter fishing and cant say I'm itchin to go again but I'm sure I will.

Dennis was first at the rail and hardly ever left.

Me and my friends wife....the only woman on this trip and the last one....she puts many men to shame.....ties rigs (nice ones too) and never leaves the rail pulls up alot of fish to boot.

One of the guys with us has a good friend who's a LEO. They give you a business card looking thing from the Policemans Benevolent Association....Some are "better" than others, the good ones have his name and badge # and such on it.....it basically tells a cop you are good friends or family with another cop and you might catch a break. Slip it in with your license and other paperwork and hope for the best.....worked in this case thank god.

Yup, you called it again....we were on the Starship, the $110 trip....I guess the Viking Star is the limited trip 28 people max for $160. According to their report they almost limited out the same day....we werent so fortunate....I liked the starship, did you have Kobe the asian guy cooking food and making rigs?
I might not make any more trips this year but if I do I'll be sure to get in touch with you through the board here and see if you're going. Would be great to hook up with you.
