Question Rotten transom

I have a 1984 cc outboard with the cut transom. Today I drilled a couple holes and water poured out. The interior wood looks like pulp and I think is rotten.
when I got the boat the transom had beened glassed over the out side and in the splash well. this did not solve any problem and was a temporary fix. Has anyonne rebuilt a transom on a cc outboard boat? Would like some ideas on how about to go about it. Thinking of closeing in and adding a bracket but im worried about a weight issue. That would get rid of the storage boxes in the gunnels and I would be putting in above the deck livewell.

Post pics. of your V. I redid the transom in my 78 cuddy. "wood and glass".
Others have used that stuff you pour in between the glass after you chain sawed out the wood.

I've got another boat that needs the transom done. Might use this stuff, I think a couple of people here have used it too.

the wood is allmost completely mush. I cut open the top of the cap of the cut out and and it was a mess. have decided to remove the aft storage seats and add twin livewells and raise the heigth of the splashwell and narrow the cut out. today I cut out the splash well and rear storage seats. the stringers dont look horrible at first ill dig into them when the transom gets cut in a few days. ill take pics and post when the wife quits taking pics of the baby, hopefully tomorrow if I dont work late. I need to mention I removed the console and pulled the gas tank cover to get a better look and be able to replace all the hoses.

Before you go making the cut out smaller remember that you can't get the steering cable off in most with out removing or at least unbolting the motor and moving it to one side.
Making it smaller might not give you the room you need to get the cable on the right way with out interference.

I will be going with a front mount seastar hydraulic ram. The boat came with out an outboard and from all the guys on here I think that I want a 150 or 175 hp ob. Ill be measuring a few boats over the holidays to make sure that i have enough room for the steering. Man I hope to get off at a decent time tomorrow I really want to post some pics. I have cut out the splash well and storage compartments and ready to cut the wood out of the transom. My buddy who lives next door said it looks good, he has done alot of glass work in the past. He redid a hewes redfisher from the stringers up and still runs the boat everyday. the fuel tank and the surronding area looks good no water damage on the old boat. the board where the oil tank and batteries rest is rotten and needs to be removed. promis pics coming soon if not tomorrow friday because im off all day and the weekend. Hope to have the transom out by sunday and ready to start mocking up next week maybe have to break and do the christmas thing with the wife and kid.

Yes, welcome to the site, keysv20. We look forward to the pics of your boat, and any of the Keys you'd like to post, too. I love the Keys. Nearly moved there, but moved to the SC Lowcountry instead.
