Default No Power to Engine

Hey All,

Well here's my dilemma and hopefully it's nothing too big or bad. You guys have taken care of me in the past and I hope you come through again. Was out yesterday with my little first mate and a friend and his son. We are having a great fishing day(Not much fish, but laughs none the less), we go to do another drift and when I go to turn over the engine( 1986 Yamaha 115), I have no power at all. Engine won't crank, turn nothing. Also the power tilt won't let me put the engine up or down. Yet I had power to everything else on the boat. Bilge, radio, fishfinder gauges etc. So to say the least I am stumped. Had to get a tow home from the bay constable( that's another story), and manually put up the engine with the screw in the back and blocked it up with a piece of driftwood. Will go out tomorrow after work to see what the story is. The fuse on the engine looks OK as do the fuses on the fuse board. Any help??Thanks....

Mark

look for a small inline fuse holder near the selenoids on the engine, I think its ussually on teh stb side. Its a small rubber thing with a wire coming out of each end, sometimes there is a spare fuse in a clear plastic holder right near the fuse

I checked on that fuse while i was out on the water. That was actually the first one I checked. It looked ok to me , but to be on safe side and the most wallet friendly, I am going to change it out anyway.

check it with a ohm meter for continuity. i did a service call on an irrigation system today that the guy swore the fuse was good & it looked good, but no continuity. this was a 3 amp, which are a lot smaller that the one on the block, but it still won;t hurt to check.

It should be that fuse or the main cables connections.
If it was the fuse, now what caused it to blow?? Normally only the tach and control box stuff is connected to it.

Get a test light and start checking for power. With an engine of that age, there could be corrsion back behind the fuse holder in the wiring that would also cause all of your problems.

Yes, the fuse provides 12V+ for all of the relays and engine functions for the engine. And as for why it would go, maybe it was just it's time to go.

No Tach was acting fine. No problems at all. As I stated everything had been running fine and up until that moment had been a great day.
