When I rebuilt my single ale aboput 3 years ago I went with 15" tires because they were rated to carry about 2400#'s each. The 14" tires were only rated for about 1750#'s each. Now I'm sorta guessing at those numbers but there close. I was putting new fenders on at the time so that wasn't a problem for me. My current trailer has 14" tires but it's a tandem and it does ride so much better.

The boat is a 1986 V-20 in great shape it has a 170 mercrusier I/O which has been rebuilt from top to bottom 1 month ago about 4 hours on the motor and has a 6 month warr. which starts in may of 2006. The boat is clean, it has black bottom paint. it comes with a docking cover and a half bimni top. if you live on long Island NY and want to take a look give me a call the trailer is a 2001 Venture dual axel with brakes and power wench the rebuit motor cost me about $ 2,800. plus misc. upgrades like alt. kit electronic ing. I have all the paper work from the Advanced Eng. of riverhead NY the package is $7,200.00 I will demo for you.

In Virginia if it's a tandom axle it's suppose to have brakes AND a VA state inspection. However, the only place I've seen that enforced is at the boat ramps (especially the city ramps). If it's a single axle then brakes aren't required, however, if it came with brakes then it's illegal to remove them. I haven't seen or heard of these laws being enforced anywhere execpt boat ramps, where on occasion we'll come back in and see a bunch of rigs with tickets on them. Personally, for what you want to do, I'd say it's up to you to determine how safe you feel pulling 3500-4000 pounds without the added assistance of trailer brakes. From a legal stand point the only place you may run into a problem is in the event of an accident. If your really concerned as to what's legal I'd recommend visiting the Department of Transportation's website for each state you plan on driving through. Otherwise, just drive safe, drive more cautiously and take your time. :)
