Ches, it sounds like a repairable problem to me...fuel pump or coil...if fixed, you're back to reliability factor as B4...certainly as reliable as buyin' newer, but used even rebuilt motor... ;)...JMHO...

Yes, it's old iron (1984). And I believe it is true they switch from powerhead to prop shaft HP rating in the mid 80's but I believe the 235 only turned into a 225 after the conversion but I could be wrong. Point being ... the V20 hull is more than capable of handing a 300 + pound motor with a plenty of horsepower hanging from off the stern. From my prespective, just because you can do it doesn't make it the best choice when looking at the bigger picture.

they'll hold twin 140's we know that. stinky and i talked of the twin 225's as the next test. by the way yes the 235 was a 175 later in life and no a 225 is a 200 Looper with larger carbs and jets that's it, a 235 and 175 are cross-flow motors.

The last time out, I was running nicely all day. Then halfway through making a little two mile run, there was a gradual decline in rpm's before dying. Tried for a maybe 45 mins. to get it going, and while on the phone w/ TowBoat, it magically fired up.

you've got a fuel delivery problem . . .

was the primer bulb flat when you stalled out?

check, clean and/or replace:

any Fuel Filters, check valves (on the fuel tank), Fuel water Seperators, primer bulbs . . . and/or try running the motor on a seperate 6 gallon fuel tank with a new bulb and hose.
Ches - I'd hate to see you buy a new motor and have the same problem :)

BS,
The way it cut out sounds like it could be fuel delivery, but that seems like the only symptom consistent with that. First day I had it out, I ran it WOT with no problems for longer than I did the day it died. Primer bulb stays full/not collapsed. It might not be a costly fix, but at this point I'm shopping for peace of mind as much as I am for replacement power. ;)

Skools,
That's kool of you. ;D
I dug up the get-it-up-and-running service order from this spring and here were the compression numbers
#1=70, #2=75, #3=70, #4=85, #5=75, #6=80
I've since put only about 10 hours on it.
Actually I was supposed to tow the boat down for vacation with the idea that the we could go see the tall ships in Beaufort by water. We'll just wing it, and thanks for offering to help.

Getting back to the original thread....
I am on the verge of repowering mine with a 2004 200HP EFI Yamaha. Should know today if I can finalize the deal.
