Well, if its just gelcoat - that area of my boat has been painted with awlgrip, so maybe the cracks were sanded out and repaired ??? ??? ???

BR WHY WOULD YOU PAINT A FAIRLY NEW HULL LIKE THAT. IS IT BETTER FOR THE GLASS OR JUST AESTHETICS.

The reason is pretty straight forward on this hull - it grew up in the hot FL sun in a slip. First owner probably didn't baby it very much, as was obvious by looking at the cowl on the 150hp that was on it when I got it. First owner also used it for diving and banged it up a little. Bottom line is, the hull was showing its age pretty good and the 2nd owner (guy before me) decided he wanted it to shine, so he awlgripped the outside and just above the rubrail. He could have probably gotten by with a wet sand/buff/wax, but I've gotta say that I LOVE the awlgrip! NO WAXING and it shines like new. He even painted most of the bottom (got hot and tired and didn't finish) of the boat after stripping off bottom paint. Also added a new rub rail which really made the boat look good. He did a ton of other things too, which are too numerous to mention.
Here's a tip most of you saltwater slip guys already know: After returning to the slip, you should alway at the very least hose down your boat and motor with fresh water, paying special attention to the stainless hardware. This will keep the salt monster at bay and keep your boat looking better than the guy next to you. If you want to go all out, break out the suds and scrub everything down too! Don't forget those fishing rods/reels! It makes ALL the difference IMHO....

Willy, I don't even think I answered your question entirely, but the answer is: it was for both glass and asthetics. The awlgrip really seals up the glass for sure and as I mentioned in the last post, it looks GREAT too!

no it's not as tough as Gel-Coat. Emron is the closest to Gel-Coat in a paint as you'll get but it's high priced and dangerous to spray. You can buy Clear Gel-Coat and spray it over a base coat of automotive paint.

Funny use for awlgrip.....
My mother-in-law wanted one of those antique clawfoot bathtubs for her bathroom. All the ones she found were in some sort of need of refinishing. Re-doing the enamel was out of the question, but someone suggested awlgrip gloss white as a substitute. My wife(?!?!? she's pretty handy!) shot the paint 12 years ago and the tub still looks brand new. Great paint. |
