Hey guys,
I'm in the process of parting out my 84 Evinrude 185. I got the lower unit off and drained the oil. Before I put it up on Ebay, I need to know the weight of this baby to determine shipping charges. I did the scale thing, but I'm not sure our scale is calibrated correctly. Anyway, the scale is readling somewhere between 45 and 50 pounds. Does that sound right? Secondly, if and when the unit does sell, how does one go about packaging something like this? Keep in mind it has the shift rod and drive shaft sticking out the top... Any help you can offer would be much appreciated.

Oooh, sorry I've never had to ship such an item. I feel sure someone here has before.
I can tell you that I used to work at UPS and you will want it packaged up really really good. They abuse the hell out of packages in there....throwing, dropping, conveyer belt jams - you name it! Good luck...I'm interested to see what other say.

Only thing I can add is yes, the weight is right.

We have shipped plants around the world and have finally come up with a reasonable method. One thing to keep in mind is the weight; box, packing and piece to be shipped. Certain shippers limit the weight of the package so be prepared for that. What I would suggest is to get a box the size the unit will fit in plus at least a couple of inches on either side. Some shippers and box manufactureres charge extra for odd sizes (it might be cheaper to ship in a larger box than you need). Go to Homedepot or Lowes (etc) and get some styro foam type insulation panels, it comes in thicknesses from 1/2-2".
Line the entire perimeter of the box with the in foam panel and then cut to form around the unit to reduce movement. Before letting the unit go for what ever price take into consideration your cost of packaging (handling) and shipping. If this don't make enough sence let me know. Benny
