Had a great time at Kodiak Lodge on Larson Bay, Kodiak Is., AK.
The lodge provides all food, fishing from boats or shore with a guide, lodging and fish processing. The weather was incredible, 70-75 on all but one day. The ocean was flat calm for most of the day. No mosquitos (yes there are flying insects) and the fishing was wide open. We fished from Aluminum boats made by Pacific with Honda OB. We never fished deeper than 90' for the halibut and used relatively light tackle. Halibut rods were 30-50 stand up type tuna rods with 3/0 reels filled with 80lb Spectra. Tackle was a very large hook (12/0) on a 300lb leader with a 1lb weight (very large tidal exchange-20'). Salmon gear was 8' Diawa mooching rod (very flexy) with baitcaster style reel w/30lb test mono. We trolled to locate fish and then would just drop over the side to hook more with a jig. I have to tell you that the fishing here is too good. Almost everywhere you stop the boat after a strike from trolling you could see the 15-20lb Coho salmon swimming around and jumping everywhere. You would only have to drop the jig about 4-6' and the salmon would start to chase it. The Coho (Silver) Salmon are good fighters and do lots of acrobatics. The largest Coho our group caught was 19 lbs. The average fish was in the 15lb range. The halibut also fight well but give up in about 10 minutes. Our largest was 140 lbs. We kept some fish in the 25 lb range, most were in the 40-60 lb class. We limited everyday on Salmon (5 per day per person) and kept about 40 halibut to 140 lbs. for the 8 of us. Check out the pics in my album. See Ya!!!! CBuzz |
