Which prop (Brand, Pitch) is most suited for my V20 with a Yammi 200, if I want:
1. Highest top Speed? 2. Best fuel economy? 3. Or a good combination of above? I would appreciate your comments, i belive that there are money to save herer. Fuel price in Sweden: 1 US Gallon (3,79 liters) = 5,47 US Dollars |

I have a 17 pitch on my Yamaha 175hp that seems to work just fine.
It kind of depends on you, what do you need?? If you want alot of speed then you will go like a 19 pitch, If you need a lot out of the hole(lot weight) power then you want like a 15 pitch. But 17 seems to be the best all around. Kind of prop?? Most boats are factory equipped with aluminum propellers. Aluminum propellers are relatively inexpensive, easy to repair, and under normal conditions can last for many years. And when hitting something they will offten just break the prop and not the lower unit!! Stainless steel is more expensive, but much stronger and durable than aluminum. If you are looking for better performance than can be provided by your aluminum propeller, such as ultimate top speed or better acceleration, a stainless steel propelleris what you want. But when you hit something you can say good by to the lower unit in most cases! I have a Aluminum that seems to be just fine. I have a Hustler Prop, they come in to pieces. The hub is seprate from the propeller. When you break the propeller you can replace it at 1/2 the cost as the prop is seprate. Works for me!! I am sure there are people that can say it better then me but thats my look on the subject I hope it helps!

Actually there are no fjords in sweden, all fjords are located in norway ;). But we have a very beautiful archipelago, on our east coast. Don't miss it if you pay sweden a visit.
The V20 Steplift *is pretty uncommon in sweden. I've seen two for sale this season, I've also seen two or three fisherman for sale in boat magazines. These boats are a little more expensive in sweden compared to US. I just bought my 1990 V20 with Yammaha 200 from 1995 for 16k USD, and that was an autumn price. |

By the way my pitch is 21" 5300RPM 50MPH WOT. (Maybe 5500 with some wind in the stern)
I'm thinking of a new prop with 20", that might give me +200RPM and better fuel economy. With current prop it sounds like the engine is working hard between 3600-4000, and thats the range where I want it to run smooth. Any tips/comments ??? ??? |

Newbie Atascadero, Ca. Gender: Posts: 32 Boat test « Reply #10 on: May 12th, 2003, 12:39pm » Quote Modify -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Just as an FYI my Yamaha manual says 4500 -5500 as the WOT setting. Seems very strange to have such a wide range on RPM for WOT. Ran my boat a local lake this last weekend with the Navman system and a Lowrance 350 GPS/FF/Plotter, full fuel ( 60 gal ) 1 person, no T-top, med load of gear. Using the Boating Mag test profile ( 90% of fuel cap 54 gal.) Boat had maximum range of 186 statute miles. Test results are as follows. RPM MPH GPH Range MPG 1000 5.3 2.4 119 2.2 2000 8.2 4.5 98 1.8 2500 13.0 6.1 115 2.1 3000 20.5 7.1 156 2.9 3500 28.3 8.2 186 3.4 4000 33.5 10.3 176 3.2 4500 38.6 12.0 174 3.2 5000 43.4 15.6 150 2.8 5400 48.5 20.1 130 2.4 It's nice to know I can get a 150 mile range with a wide range of speeds. After looking at the numbers I am going to add a 19 gal permanent tank under the console. We regularly fish 30-50 miles offshore for tuna and will need the extra fuel for trolling and saftey margin. I ordered a T-top to be made locally and that will increase fuel usage also. These tests were made under ideal conditions, no wind, 75 degrees and on a lake with no swell or chop. Please do not use these numbers for your boat. I can say that I have been very satisfied with the Navman unit so far. It says to mount sensor in a vertical position for best results but I mounted mine right above the gas tank in a horizontal position and put a small fuel filter right in front of it, seems to work great. The features are much better than the FloScan that I had in my last boat. You get current consumption, total, trip & fuel remaining w/alarm. You do have to reset the fuel remaining after each fillup. You can also set it to read Liters, Imp. gallons and US gallons and also has a calibration mode if readings are not exact. My Floscan system was consistently off by about 3-5 % over and under. This thing a great buy at $149.00 from outerbanks.com no tax and no shipping charges. No I don't work there but I would if I could get a big discount Charlie Buzzetti « Last Edit: May 12th, 2003, 12:40pm by cbuzz » |

mroger...I just repowered my step-v w/a Honda 150...had a dickens of a time finding correct prop...turned out to be Mercury's "Mirage Plus" 17 pitch...hole shot, mid-range, cruising and flirts with 6 grand at WOT...the Mirage plus is a "high horsepower, heavy hull(that's us, brothers)...sure did the trick for me...a Mirage 20 pitch might be a good prop for you...I noticed my fuel efficiencency improved, too...
Question...our gas prices have risen like crazy this year...I know your prices were already high, but did they increase significantly this year?...
