Its great stuff, and as said hard as brick, if you spread even you will have less to sand! You can make it harden slower by adding less hardner.
But in a large area I would use paint or something to seal it.
I used it on my bow rail holes and did not cover it with anything, looks great.

Used it to redo the whole bow on my friends whaler, it was near a fire and scaled all up!, chiped away high stuff sanded filled with 27 sanded and painted still looking good!
