As you can tell no great expense has been applied to most of this project. My initial goal is to get operational and then get a feel of what I might want to modify.

i have the same tanks, and had the same problem, I got rid of the ball in there years ago!!
If I could make a sugestion, On these old models they put the gas vents below the rub rail, well they all leak gas!! When you fill up they will splash out, when you going down the road and stop gas comes splashing out all over! This was a poor design!! and I am not alone, I have spoke with others that have had the same problem. What I did was disconect the oringal and left in place as not to have to fix the hole. Then added New 90* angle ones up higher on the Gunnel step up, Have never had another problem. Keep up the good work!!

Like MJ, I moved mine above the rub-rail also...mine was takin' on water in turns in any kind of seas...you might wanna keep it as for now, but 1st time you get water in your gas or you see a trail of gas runnin' from them, you'll wanna make this change ;) ...

Thanks MJ an Reel. That's why I'm hesitant to made many changes at this point without having prior knowledge of problems to come.
When daddy had the boat, instead of replacing the stuff and cleaning the tanks he just used a surface tank, so I'm sure he is unaware of the vent problem. Once I get it useable I'm sure to made other changes. Oh on ya'lls fuel gauge(s), did you have one or two? I was going to try this anyway, mine had one gauge and a three position switch. Basically, left tank, off, right tank.

I had one gauge as you say, But they never worked right and I have no used a gauge in 8 years!
I just know now, I do a 30 mile round trip, and maybe another 10 or 20 moving around tyrying different spots and when they day is done I have used 15 to 18 gal gas. Unless I went off shore, I have never used more then 1 tank of gas for the day. I also have a 3rd tank I put were the I/O use to be before I converted, Thats total 65 gal.

I put two new gauges in for mine, but the single gauge/switch setup works great...just depends on what ya wanna do and how much room ya got... ;) ...

Oh, and to make dang sure we're (mostly) USCG approved with the filler and vent tubeing.
