Ferm, the 9.9 hp Suzy you see on my V20 as a auxillary has been on two boats as the full time motor (aluminum fresh water) and two boats as the auxillary. It starts first time every time and runs like it is a 25 hp. Pushes the V to 10-12 mph :o

This always happens with motors in particular, I don't care for mercs because of my personal experience and that of the people I have fished and boated with, but another guy does not care for Rudes or whatever because of his experience. Some guys stopped liking yammies when they first came out because they would rust to death in the salt especially. It all comes down to what your experience has been. Skools can take an Rude/Johnnie apart in his sleep, and may have had some sexual experiences with them ;D so he favors them. Big Shrimpin has the same thing for Mercs, though I don't believe he has had relations with them. Wind Talker loves yammies and is comfortable working on them, and God only knows what he does to them when the sun goes down ::) A lot of guys are hot for the ETEC, including myself, but they have little time on the water so far and according to the ETEC tech I spoke with they are nothing more than a FICHT motor block with an improved computer, much faster and supposedly more durable along with some fuel delivery improvements. I asked him what he runs on his boat. He smiled and said a yammie. Blondes, red heads, brunettes, Irish Italian Asian (with injured wrists) it all comes down to personal comfort and experiences.

I'm no mechanic but here is my take on used motors either fresh or salt water..Any motor that age is a throw away regardless of who makes them in my opinion unless you have the skills that skools has and can rebuild them so you are pretty much just buying the boat. A friend of mine bought a big water duck boat last year with a very clean fresh water 1992 Zuki 2 stroke 90 HP with low hours on it and it ran like a banchie but started to heat up because it sucked up a lot of sand and the heat alarm was on at low speed so we decided to put on a new water pump...NO BIG DEAL....We worked on the lower unit for two days and could not budge it as it was fused to the power head at the other end ..He took it to a zuki dealer who even tried heat, drop weights etc but no go so the guy told him that it was toast as it would not come free ..I had a merc do the same thing a few years ago but again it was an old motor also..I have personally had MUCH better luck with Johnnyrudes over the years but thats just me and they are easy to get parts for..A friend of mine up the creek has a new VERY high dollar Zukie 300 on his whaler and loves it...I know a guy in canada that just buys old 70's and 80's johnnyrudes for his fish camps for 5 to 6 hundred dollars apiece that seem to run forever with no proper maintenance and when they blow he rebuilds them as he has so many parts available..and the winters are long....Frank

Yep...buyin' a used motor can be a crap-shoot, but there are many success stories...my ol' '86 Rude gave me several years of trouble-free use B4 it died...I's reel pleased w/ it... ;) ...

I've never heard a bad thing about small ones just the larger ones i'm not down on Suzuki I've had several of their GSX-R Bikes. my favorite street bike but their old outboards in the 50 to 60 HP up i stay away from till they get to be 1998 up i'd take them. My favorite bike was a 1995 GSX-R 750 frame with a 1997 GSX-R 1100 motor bored to 1218 with kehin 40's.

As with any outboard, there are good and bad ones. When I was a kid everybody said stay away from MERCURY, but I've found them to be pretty solid. JOHNNY-RUDES used to be KING, but then came the FICHTS. I personally never liked YAMAHA, and still don't(yet I have a 250 at the house I'm rebuilding). And SUZUKI had alot of issues with corrosion, and I know the V-6's had issues with cylinders going out @ under 100 hours. They have good and bad ones, just like women ;D.
