Default Starter and Trim/ Tilt

After running for over an hour I go to start up after some fishing and the starter gear is not popping up to engage the flywheel. We ended up pull starting the motor and it fired right up. Does this require the started to be replaced, or can the Bendix drive be replaced?

Then, I'm approaching my slip and I go to tilt up a bit, as I usually do, and the motor is barely moving up at all. Eventually, the motor did come up enough that I could get in, but then my fishing partner physically assisted the motor to the full up position while I was holding the button.

It did go down slow as well, but not as painfully slow as up.

Has anyone had these experiences? Any tips, ideas on where to start with the trouble shooting?

I did some voltage checks and the battery is fully charged and voltage is at the starter motor. I have virtually no experience with the tilt unit.

Thanks in advance

Carl

Low voltage will cause both of those problems. I'm guessing that you've got a loose / dirty connection somewhere or a batt. cable thats rotted inside the insulation. You could well have "good voltage" but when under load not enough amps pass through for the starter or trim pump to work effectively.

My best guess....

And on top of what Air said put some lube on the starter shaft, my Mercury did that and it was because it was dry and stuck, stop at a shop and pick up the right kind of lube, I forget what they called it.
Also on the power tilt and trim have you checked the fluid levels, low levels will cause just what you had. Also have you checked for any leaking around the seals or for fluid under the unit?

I'm back in business. Thanks for advice guys. Sure enough - After replacing both battery cables and starter cables, both the starter and power tilt worked fine. After that, for good measure, I cleaned all the connections, topped off the power tilt fluid and charged the battery.

Funny how a bad connection or loose battery cable can cause so many issues!

I'll second that, once a loose ground connection and once a corroded connection at the solenoid.
