yes the 78 still had the inside lip.
Starboard will work perfectly. You can round off the edges with standard router bits. I find that a fine tooth plywood saw blade on a table saw is best. I would try to get black starboard. Might be a lot cheaper to get 12 x 12 x 1/2 and double it
