Black is pretty normal on plugs. Shiny and new scares me. I'll wait on smarter folks to chime in but I had one of those old 50's with the brown stripes. I was a kid and I couldn't wear it out. Leaking carbs meant it had a stuck needle and seat. For me at least, the motor was simple enough I literally fixed it at the ramp with a couple open end wrenches and screwdrivers. Lucky I didn't tear a gasket that day. I don't know the backstory on yours. Mine screamed, literally. It was real noisy. Metal cowl with no insulation. Take the three piece cowl off and holy crap it was loud beyond loud. All the old inlines were loud come to think of it.

That's a classic 50? 4 cylinder? Sorry the previous post I made was about it being a 3 cylinder. Those engines are pretty basic. Look into the carbs and sqeeze the primer bulb, if you have gas coming out of the carb, the needle needs cleaning/replacing or their float is bad. Running rich(excess fuel) will cause the plugs to be black, running real rich(rolling fuel) will clean the plugs off, they will look wet. Like I said in teh other post have the carbs gone thru. Decarb the engine, and rebuild teh fuel pump, you should be goof to go

I have one question, if I take the bowl down by unscrewing the bolt What would happen? Are pieces of the carb going to fall out? What will I see Thanks

Not very familiar with that specific card, most will not let parts fall out. Float should hinge up and down, which raises needle to seat and allows gas to flow. If float drops too far, could allow needle to fall out, I guess.

How many carbs on this engine? Is it the mercury or the Yamaha?

I have a tohatsu 40 with 3 carbs, I found it easier to pull all three at once
