Hi Everyone,
I have an '85 V20 with a 150hp Yamaha outboard. In doing my spring (if it ever gets here!) prep, I noticed that the drain hose on the starboard outside drain needs to be replaced. Unfortunately due to my short arms and ample stomach girth, I am unable to get to the fitting through the aft storage compartment. There is no one nearby with long arms that I trust to do the job for me, so I was thinking about cutting an access opening in the fiberglass under the aft seat, replacing the hose, and then fitting an access cover to close the hole I made. Any suggestions/recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Roger

sounds like a plan to me..... one thought tho, if one side needs replaced the other likely does too.... and if the fittings are plastic consider replacing them at the same time.

Thanks! Good idea, I was thinking of doing the other side as well, you now gave me the impetus.
Does anyone else have any other ideas about how to change the hoses? Just realized, my V is an '84 not an '85. Sorry about that!

mine broke while running on the bay, bilge kept me aflote to the dock then water poured in till I got it on the boat lift. My tall skinny son In law who is mechanically disadvantaged replaced mine with me supervising so it is not as difficult as it looks , getting the old one out is the hard part

Too bad you aren't down this way, my son is 6'4, 170#.
When I replaced mine I went to a plumbing supply store and got drains for a wet bar sink. Then found the 90 degree elbow at True Value. Look at the bottom of page 3 in the thread link below. http://wellcraftv20.com/community/sh...?t=7665&page=3

I'm planning on putting in access hatches on the stern gunnels below the top stern hatches. Def recommend stainless or bronze, and double clamps on good quality hoses.

Thanks guys, you justified what I want to do. I'll get the parts, do the work, and let you know how it came out.
This is the one (and only) time I wish I still lived on Long Island - there are no marine supply stores anywhere near me, and almost everything has to be bought online...

speaking of drains...
Since I have such easy access to mine I decided to replace all. Seems they don't make them like they did in 1984. The diameter of the hole in the side of my boat is 1-1/2". The fitting does have some play inside the hole. The fitting is a combination 1-1/4 AND 1-1/8 hose barb. (I know, I need pix!). Fitting available at marine stores and online do not fit a 1-1/2 HOLE. NO FITTING DESCRIPTIONS STATE THE DIAMETER OF THE HOLE REQUIRED. They tell you the hose barb size, the Flange OD and the max thickness of hull. I stood in West Marine comparing what I had with every brand and material in the store. Seems my choice is drill bigger or fill & drill smaller. Also.... the fitting in the deck is 1" hose going to the 1-1/8 side fitting, which isn't right(has been that way forever). Also, my bilge overboard is the same combination 1-1/4 AND 1-1/8 hose barb. My bilge pump has a 1-1/8" but the better quality fittings are 1" or 1-1/4", no 1-1/8. And they don't carry the type with the built in flapper to prevent backwash. Was hoping to use those.
